Thoughts of a canal cruise probably evoke impressions of a gentle, relaxed glide on tranquil waters.
But now and then, you just have to put your back into it.

Now that was some very interesting footage Mr. B.    I really liked the design of the 1st bridge.  It looked a bit hard to move it off the canal but much easier to put it back in place.

The canal boat at about 2:53 must have been in a serious hurry as he was in no mood to stand off while the poor guy was cranking the handle as fast as he could.  Looked like he just missed scraping the bottom of the bridge.

What a cool contraption! How is the first "pull up" bridge operated? Manually as well?

Hi RDB. There's a fair bit of exercise to be had when narrow-boating
That manoeuvre at 2m53 wasn't as bad as it looked from my perspective. The guy on the boat would be in line with edge of the cut (canal) and could assure himself that there was enough clearance.

Hi Depp.  The second bridge was electrically operated - which I'm sure they were glad about. Winding them up and down manually is hard work

Yes.  At first I was confused by the bridge number (22) as I only filmed at three successive ones, of which the first (rotating) bridge was 25, as you can see.  But then I realised that there is a stone bridge (23) as well.  At walking pace it was easy to overtake and wait for them to catch up at each obstacle

So youve taken to chasing boats too.  .  That shot with the tractor was the one that popped up the other day when I looked at your route.    It's a curious design.

It's easier than chasing rainbows
Curious design?  The tractor, or the bridge?
The bridge is a standard cantilever bridge. Some are electrically operated, but others have to be wound by hand.

Good to know.  In watching the video it sure looked like he was cutting it way too close.  Keep up the great work Mr. B.

Wait until I spot one going through the locks - that's labour-intensive too. And there's a flight of them in Marple

I find it amusing that I can walk from one end of the canal spur to the other (about 12Kms) faster than they can progress. So I can stop occasionally and set up the Action 2 ready for when they arrive at a certain point

It will depend on luck, more than anything else.  Me happening to be passing the locks as a narrowboat makes its way through.  Sometimes you could sit there all day and not see one.

Yeah, and they also maintain them, so they are here to stay.
Seems like they have installed a new bridge that is prepared for the event that is should be opened not long ago.
