Funnily enough,  yesterday I was out on the canal paths and spoke with a guy with an unusual boat,    it turned out he dredges the canal on behalf of Tesco's to recover trolleys.    He averages 100 trolleys a year.

A sad statistic, isn't it.  As we were strolling along a riverbank yesterday  (which passes a tesco store as it  happens) we could see a trolley sticking out of the water in midstream.

It's amazing how far away from stores they can appear too,  there are two in the creek that are 3 miles from the nearest supermarket and most of that is cross country.

I'm sure there must  be a layabouts' challenge to see who can deposit one the furthest from a store.
There's a sign at the end of the parking area of one tesco near us, saying that the trolley wheels will lock beyond this point.  I've never tested it

The big Tesco in the next town has that system,   I worked there when I was at college and back then they had a tractor and trailer that would tour the town collecting them.

I used to like to do some OT on the trolleys as they had a promotion on at the time where you could send in your Tesco receipt and get vouchers for the train.  It was something like £1 train voucher for every £10 spent in store.   I would collect the receipts left in the trolleys and the girlfriend at the time would redeem them,    That summer we spent almost every spare hour we had in London and never paid for the train or tubes.   We explored a lot.

Does "trolley" mean the same as cart (as in shopping cart)?

haha,   Yes you could say that.     It's a shame the promotion didnt last longer but we had our moneys worth for sure.

Interesting afternoon for me.  My daughter called and said a friend of hers was all upset because she had lost her wedding rings in her backyard.  I got out my trusty metal detector and went over to her house.  15-20 minutes later I found them.  She had almost given up and was ecstatic that I was able to find them.  I don't metal detect a lot anymore since all the laws have gotten so strict but nice to use it once and a while on private property.  Also nice that I could help out and make her day.

By the way, on your last 4 day trip did you come across any more animal statues?
