Oh and yes he does appear to have moored up to a navigation marker.

That's absolutely splendid.  Mooring to navigation marker?  Is that a misdemeanour?

I dont recall if I learnt the etiquette of that one,  but there were plenty of empty white buoys available.

Great shot DA.    It does appear that you've been adopted by the local oyster catchers.

Can't tie up to navigation markers here.

Check out the beak on him.

Remarkably good shot - that beak could ruin a drone's day.  I had a close encounter with a curlew the other day but the still frame from the video is quite blurred.

Ive realised that theres an early warning system for the Oyster Catchers,  before they get close they start to make a very high pitched song.

That was cropped from an AEB shot,     more luck than anything.

Out of the three shots, that was the only one where the beak was visible,    they really do move those birds.

I couldnt find a top speed but they seem to live for 35 years.   Which seems a lot for a bird.

Gannets and albatrosses are long-lived, I believe. And Condors.

Bigger birds usually are,  but the smaller ones are usually quite short and the Oyster catchers and smaller than gulls.

I suppose predation of smaller birds by the bigger ones limits their life expectancy too.

Chris Packham on Springwatch has just announced that the longest -lived, recorded age for an oyster catcher is now 43 years.

I thought it was related to the size of the animals heart.

Now what a coincidence that is.   And 43 years is just amazing.  Did he give any more reason for it ?

I googled it,   bigger the heart the slower it tends to beat so the time to get to the total number of beats is slower.

Knowing the exact figure for total number of beats would be interesting.  Could lead to longevity for us if we slept 23 hours a day

Yes there's no logic to the "Number of Beats" theory.  If that were true, all sports people would be dead before their time, whereas many of them live well beyond the "average".

I think the logic is around the resting heart rate rather than active.
