It does make me wonder why they get that bad.  Although I used to know someone with a lotus.    the foot wells kept getting white so he would clean them,  eventually he moaned to lotus about it and they told him to stop cleaning it as the white oxidisation was protecting what was left of the metal

That's quite interesting.  First time I've ever heard anybody say quit cleaning.

The oxide protects the metal naturally.  I think in the end he cleaned and polished it and then clear coated it to seal it.
