Is the Avata/O3 4K resolution totally fake?

I just did a bunch of O3 video tests to convince myself to stop flying with my GoPro in 4:3 ratio 4K, but instead found out that 4K on the O3 Air Unit video is just the 2.7K upscaled to 4k. There is also no difference in the horizontal Field Of View between 2.7k and 4k and the detail/image quality are the exact same when you scale up 2.7k by 1.333x to match the 4k resolution. The Avata/O3 also can't shoot 4k in 4:3, probably because the sensor isn't capable of doing that? DJI's Ferdinand Wolf said in an interview with Chris Rosser that the 2.7k 100fps and 1080p 100fps have less latency than 4k 100fps, sounds like it is upscaling or something. I feel really misled by all the "stunning 4K" and "Effective Pixels: 48MP" advertising that made me buy this instead of my GoPro when the only way we can use the whole sensor is to shoot 2688x2016 and use Gyroflow.

  • What is the native resolution of the sensor?
  • Are there any specs for the sensor resolution or bitrates of the recordings we can see?
  • Why is the widest FOV only available up to 2688x2016 resolution?
  • Why can't we shoot 4k in 4:3 and instead only get upscaled 2.7k?
  • Why doesn't it record gyro data with the video in super wide?

To get real 4K you need to use Wide FOV. Every camera has its native FOV, if you don't use it the image is basically cropped

Yeah, but there is no difference between Wide 2.7k and Wide 4k is what I am saying. If you shoot 2.7k and scale it up to 4k, you get the exact same image quality as shooting 4k. I have found no combination of settings that give you real 4k. If the sensor can only do 4:3 ratio in 2.7k, that makes me think the sensor’s native resolution is not more than that. So far, I can’t believe that 4k on the Avata/O3 is anything but the native 2.7k resolution scaled up to 4k. I wish there were specs for the sensor or a comment from DJI to prove otherwise. This is how DJI drones and GoPros worked for a long time until the Hero 9 came out, so I am pretty sure that’s what DJI is trying to pass off with this camera as well.

Can't confirm or deny specs, but very content with the quality it delivers, falls short from Skydio, which just so happens to be 8bit :/.  But Anyone with a Skydio 2 will probably vouch on the image quality it has, like straight out of camera no presets needed.

I recall 4k is about 12mega pixel in photos, resolution is not the only factor, its more related towards pixel density, like 8k is 4x the pixels of 4k, I'm a photographer with a 42mp but camera only records 4k :/
Theres many methods of upscaling of pixels like stacking, etc etc lots of geeky stuff; end of day long as it looks good, with good dynamic range to give it depth and puts a smile on your face, who cares about the details lol
