They do quite well at their level.  Made it to a Wembley final in 2009 (Lost 0-2)

Kind of like Baseball here in the US.  You got to pay your dues in the Minor Leagues in order to earn a spot on the Major Leagues.  Sometimes the minor league games are more fun to watch than the major league games.  Definitely a lot cheaper per ticket for the minor games.

I'm more of a fan for college football (not soccer) and baseball.  As these players are not compensated they are playing for the love of the game and seem to have a lot of fun doing it.  It's interesting that less than 1% of them go on to play at the professional level.

Probably that 1% are the ones with the single-minded determination needed.

I think you are absolutely right about that.  Then they have to somehow get by on their miniscule minor league salaries before they can make big money in the majors.  

Pitchers Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander have more than Cy Awards in common, the two right-handers are the highest-paid major league players this season, each earning $43 million.  Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees is the highest-paid non-pitcher at $40 million.   Kind of insane salaries if you ask me.

In the grand scheme of things, there are individuals who make far greater contributions to the benefit of mankind and earn a small fraction of that kind of salary.  It's out of all proportion

I think they are grossly overpaid for playing sports but that's just my personal opinion.  Just like I think many corporation CEOs are grossly overpaid, especially when their employees are scrimping by on their meager salaries.
