For years I just assumed that the 16:9 would be gathering extra information on the side of the photos that would be left off the 4:3.... but I just realized that its the opposite. The 16:9 is cropped in from the 4:3 instead of vice versa.

Just figured I'd pass that along in case anybody else was under the same incorrect assumption I have been

Like what?

16:9 on M3P is 5272 × 2962
4:3 on M3P is 5272 × 3948

If you look at your screen when you change from the 4:3 to the 16:9 you'll see that its cropped in and you can see less of the landscape than in the 4:3

You are correct in part. However,  The 16:9 aspect ratio is 78% wider than it is tall, while the 4:3 aspect ratio is only 33% wider than it is tall. This means that the 16:9 aspect ratio is better suited for displaying more information horizontally, while the 4:3 aspect ratio provides more vertical space (google explanation)

This has nothing to do with how it displays on certain screens.

By "capturing more information" I mean that the 4:3 is photographing more of the environment than the 16:9.

If you use 16:9 on your drone, you are literally losing parts of the photo that you would have captured had you used 4:3. That's the point.
