Hi

Are all HEVC videos 10 bit? Because this is 4K 50 fps HS balancing normal mode normal color and MediaInfo shows it like this.
If I use AVC it show that AVC videos are 8 bit.
So all normal HEVC videos are 10 bit color and AVC videos are 8 bit? is this because HDR?I believed that only LOG profile is 10 bit.
This was something new that I just noticed when started inspect files.

HEVC is just a more efficient way of compressing video. If you shoot in 10 bit, then it needs to be stored as hevc but 8 bit can be stored as h264 or hevc.

I think 10 bit is only available when you use d-log m.

If you are watching on an 8 bit system though, 10 bit won't look any different from 8 bit in any case.

Yes I know this. I have done grading years back. But it tags normal videos as 10 bit if HEVC selected?

I don’t think that hevc is inherently 10 bit.

Isn't there avc and avc-intra? The intra used for 10 bit and avc 8 bit?

Gonna make some deep searching. Same program show my Hero 6 HEVC files are 8 bit. But yeah I'm pretty sure that only LOG is 10 bit.

I don't have time these days be video file geek and do editing but just noticed that my software shows those are 10 bit I believe pixel colors are less. Gonna inspect more later how files are generated.

It have 10 bit for normal colors also with H.265 now, in last firmware.
And checked one of my files and it said 10 bit.

Hi there. Not all HEVC outputs 10-bit color profiles, and D-Log M color mode are in 10-bit color depth. After the firmware version v01.01.06.30, Osmo Action 4 has added shooting 10-bit video in Efficiency mode (HEVC). Have a great day ahead.

Is the reason for doing 10 bit in efficiency mode because it is actually more efficient outputting 10 bit instead of 8 bit output? I have a use case where I want to maximize battery life. I don't care about 10 bit but if it is more efficient then that makes sense.

It looks to me that, once you set HEVC as codec, both Normal and D-Log profile will be 10bit.
I HATE the phone hdr look of this 10 bit colors, so I use H264 codec.

That is likely how your playback system is rendering the files. There is no 'HDR' look inherent with these files from the Action 4 on a calibrated system, whether in 'normal' colour and certainly in D-LOG M. Some systems do have difficulty in decoding HEVC files - and in rendering their output, however.

Hi bleighty,

Thank you for your question. We have forwarded your inquiry to the relevant engineering team. We will communicate with the team regarding whether 10-bit output is more efficient.

Thank you for your patience.

Hello bleighty,

Thank you for your patience.

Regarding the more efficient output you mentioned, could you please provide further details on what you mean, such as improvements in image quality or reductions in file size?

As for battery life, it is independent of the mode selected. The device uses a lithium-ion battery, which does not have a fixed lifespan. The battery capacity naturally degrades with usage, and the rate of degradation is significantly influenced by your usage and storage habits. With proper maintenance, the battery can remain functional for 2-3 years. However, some behaviours such as extended periods of deep discharge, can result in rapid cell damage and failure.

We recommend referring to the following article for battery maintenance guidelines to help extend your battery's lifespan: https://support.dji.com/help/con ... p;re=US&lang=en

Thank you once again for your support of the DJI Osmo Action 4.

That's what I mean with ugly hdr look.
