Hola !

I recently bought a DJI Osmo Action 4 but to my suprise, I can't use the product since it asks me to activate it with the use of an app, from a "smartphone" on Android or iOS (the only proposed way).

Problem #1 : I don't have a "smartphone".

Problem #2 : I installed the proposed .apk on the smartphone of a friend (a Huawei P smart 2019), but the app refuses to open.
In details, it opened the first time, downloaded some initial update, then freeze for ~2min before shutting down.

So far for now, I just own a small brick (not the cheepest).

I have the  following questions :

1) Does it exist a legitim reason why to restrict the use to the owener for those type of product ?
Otherwise it seems like a violation of the freedom 0 of the user, aka the freedom of use.

2) Can we activate the device via an alternative way, like simply from a computer (but I'm on a GNU/Linux disto) or via a file from the SD-card ?

3) If not to the previous question, why restrcit the possibilities ?

Thanks for your light !

Definitely a pain. Without access to the Mimo app, you also won't get camera firmware updates.

If it's the case it will be a real shame, cause they knew how to do thing right in the past. I found this video for updating the firmware of the Osmo Action 1 via the SD-card :

I don't see anywhere in DJI Support you can download new firmware for the Action 4. This should be an option - requiring the Mimo app on a compatible device as the sole method is absurd - you don't need the app for camera operation.

I cannot agree more on that.

Hi there. Thank you for reaching out and we do apologize for the trouble. The first requirement to use the unit is to activate it using the DJI Mimo app, otherwise, it cannot be used for capturing videos and photos. When using your brand-new DJI Osmo Action 4 for the first time, you have five chances to skip the activation process for product experience. Once the provided chances have been used up, you need to connect the camera to the DJI Mimo app for activation. Lastly, we don't have any option to activate the product other than the DJI Mimo app. Thank you for your understanding.

It's about data collection and spying on users. The Mimo app is a 1GB bloatware. Why on earth would anyone need a 1GB app just update the firmware? DJI thinks everyone edits videos on their phone so they bundle all sorts of garbage into a single app and forcing users to download it for registration and FW updates.

I have the feeling that it might be true, since they seem to refuse to give us a legitim explanation.

Can you also give us some light for the #3 and #1 ?

For now, since I cannot use the device, I will have to send it back for a refund.

I would love to know the reason for us having to register the camera via a phone app. 5 chances and you’re out!

We have never had to do this with cameras other than the GoPro and this one. There’s nothing especially difficult about manually updating firmware and proof of purchase is on the receipt. At least GoPro allow us to install updates manually, but this need to download an app just to register and update our cameras is painful.

Eventually, this practice may be stopped. It is totally unnecessary.

Thanks for the info about GoPro. So I will not buy it in replacement of this DJI Action 4. Keeping my old but trusty Sony X3000 ^^

Thumb up about the end of such liberticide practice

Doubt that dji sends out private information about its users, but if you are paranoid then google knows an incredible amount about you already and it is worse that the USA gets that information.

I agree. But what's bugs me is that, I don't recall any youtuber complained about this apparent violation of the freedom 0 of the user. Otherwise, I wouldn't have bothered myself watching hours of videos about this action cam to see if it will suit me...

May I remind you that this list is first and foremost for checking and troubleshooting with the Pocket 2. While some of the tips could work with other cameras as well, it is not guaranteed.

Sorry to hear about the OPs troubles with the activation. I have felt the same frustration myself and cannot see the advantages of activation requirement for the users of the camera.

Not sure about the Action 4, but the Pocket 2 DID have an alternative way to update the firmware through PC, it's just that DJI didn't advertise it that much. So it could be possible that the Action 4 does have some alternative method for firmware updates as well.

That is a very good point. It's not always about the party who is spying on you, but more about being spied on in general. We should not need to put up with this, no matter who does it.

Just like you, I am amazed about why so many of the youtubers keep completely quiet about it. Makes me suspect if they have been paid to keep quiet about it.

this is not a good way of doing business but this is theur House, not ours. If you have a phone, great, since you do not then its not the camera for you if you can not find the means to update. if you want to go to a local store or ask   the person to your left/right or at work that has a phone, update and move on  not insulting

Oh yeah, just go to your local Piggly Wiggly and ask the person next to you in line to download a 1GB app for you so you can activate your camera, LOL. That's how I met my GF, too :-)

Not sure it will recive well here in France

It is true that they both use it, and nothing wrong per se to mention the thread here, it's just that while some cameras and versions of Mimo app might work with this list, the others may not. For instance, I managed to install the Mimo app on my previous phone, and I suspect it could have worked with the original Osmo Pocket, but it didn't work with the Pocket 2.

But, of course, if the mention of the thread helps the OP, then certainly nothing wrong about linking it. Just wanted to mention this to avoid the worst disappointments.

In Europe we are all protected by GDPR and can request our personal information be removed from any website or private company.
It makes little sense to sign up for this forum and the complain about signing up to an app for the same company all you’re doing is giving the same protected information. Being from the US may be different.
