It is not useless, unless you have an internet connection while flying you need to cache map if you want an accurate DISPLAY of the map. If you do not cache the map the map will just be grey, but the quad will still fly fine. The quad has its own gps. The only time the tablet needs GPS is if you want to reset the current homepoint to where the transmitter is currently, in other words if the location is changed and you and it to fly home to the transmitter and not where it took off from with a RTH.
The cellular version has a gps and you do not need a sim card. Also a bluetooth connection on a wifi tablet to compatible gps unit will also allow the homepoint to change.
Not a big deal if you fly and land at the same point. But you need to cache the maps if you want them displayed.
