I’ve had the Osmo Action 4 for a few months now. When I’m not taking action shots I use my camera as a dash cam.

When used as a dash cam I record in 1080p with loop recording set and a 20 minute time interval. I had assumed old files would be overwritten. But all that is happening is that the camera is recording video and saving clips of up to 20 minutes and then it stops recording when there is no more space on the SD card. Older files are not being overwritten.  This defeats the object of having loop recording function.

Have I got my loop recording settings wrong?  Or is there something wrong with the camera?

Have never tested loop recording with OA4, but my old sjcam overwrote the oldest recordings, which is what should be normal.

Thanks for the responses.  I don't think I have got the settings wrong.  Just checked the DJI Osmo Action 4 user manual and it states: “Loop Recording: when enabled, the camera records a video by overwriting older footage with new footage at selected time intervals”.  I have just sent an email to DJI Support.  I think a firmware update is needed (unless I have a genuine problem with my camera)

I have had the following response from DJI support:

“The most recent video segment will be recorded over the oldest video segment. However, the “Loop Duration” option determines the number and duration of the video clips. The storage space occupied by shooting is calculated in advance, and if the calculated storage space is greater than the current residual storage, the warning “insufficient storage” will appear. If a longer loop duration is required, the user is recommended to purchase a storage card with a larger capacity.”

It’s a shame DJI has used the term “loop recording” because I think it is misleading. The way ‘loop recording’ works with other cameras is that it allows for continuous recording even if the memory card reaches full capacity. Or put another way, older files are overwritten once the SD card reaches its file size limit but video recording is continuous (hence the notion of loop recording).

Hi.  Any update regarding this issue?  Seems to be a longstanding issue, this youtube video (not mine) is 11 months old.

No it hasn’t been resolved in the sense that the camera does not automatically write over old files. I think me and DJI have a difference of opinion as to what ‘loop recording’ is. I am still having to delete files when the SD card is full (rather than the camera automatically recording over the oldest file).  I have got used to the limitation now
