I am having issues with wifi reception when I position the drone over my head.
Distance-wise I could get reasonably far, but when I position they drone over my head to take pictures, I lose
the wifi connection overhead even if I raise the drone as little as 20 meters high.

Is this how it is for others as well?
How should I orient the antennas when the drone is overhead?

Yes I get the same thing though maybe at slightly greater heights.
I believe it is because the antennae do not radiate their signals in a spherically symmetrical field, rather the radiation is strongest in certain directions. With the drone this is probably horizontally fore and aft.
It might also apply to reception.
I find it helps a bit to have the controller's antennae parallel to the ground when the drone is over head.
