And Ive tracked down the name of Clayton's Tower but still the purpose is alluding me.

Seems its a bit of a mystery this tower, the history about it is curious.

It was a bit trickier than usual.   Curious place though.

Thgere's no mystery to it now - it was built as a folly by William Clayton.
And you could be mistaken for thinking it was a Public Toilet when you see it from a distance.

Over the last 150 years the trees have surrounded it and its value as a landmark is largely obscured.

Yes. From Rainow to Bollington and then up to White Nancy for another flight. and back south along Kerridge edge with another flight at the Trig Point.

As I flew along the ridgeline there was a definite drift to the left.

Most certainly. Coming up the other side, there was no wind at all.

I climbed up a tor like that in Cornwall and personally felt the wind on the ridge,  strong enough I couldnt quite safely get to the top.

It's actually a construction we call a Folly, Dan.  Built to look like a round tower, or mill chimney, it serves no purpose other than to demonstrate the wealth and power of the landowner.
In this case, one William Clayton, a mine owner in the 19th century
