Great shot.     They do light up the dayk sky like a beacon.  No doubt their electric bills are quite high.  However, if you can afford a house that size with a 3 car garage then I guess you can afford a high electric bill.

The one on the left had a garage built underneath the house,    they spent months digging it out,  the mess they caused on the road was terrible.

The one on the left went up for sale a while back for 19 million.  It didnt sell.    My cousin bought a property a couple of houses up from there a few years back and when that went up for sale the estate agents made a video that went viral where they pushed the agent into the swimming pool.

That is quite interesting.  I've only seen a few underground garages and they were all up in the Northeast.  Water table is not low enough to have a basement or underground garage in my area.

They dont normally approve it here but with money there is a way.    a friend of mine is a furniture maker and he was doing a Job a few houses from there and the guy didnt get approval for planning.   So he built the extension as planned and got the sign off and then dugout below to form the basement in secret.     He was super annoyed because he was in an area that meant he had to do very large long concrete piles which would still be required to have the basement,  so he left in a small window where all the dirt went through.

Pretty devious on his part but no doubt it worked out for him.

Happens a lot here with the planning permissions.   A neighbour got planning for an extension but they were denied a garage as the drive was too short, so they had to have an open carport.  When it was signed off the carport was open but contained all the services, fuse board and the utility room stuff like washing machine.   Wishin the hour of the sign off they had doors installed.

That's is one way to beat the system.  Here, the building inspectors conduct random spot checks but as there is so much building going on they rarely catch any offenders.

Ive never known that to happen here,   but to give you an example how bad they are,   the MIL neighbour was building a house and they put the footings in the wrong place compared to the plans,    we reported it and said you need to come quick before they pour concrete.   They took weeks to come and then said "well as they've poured the concrete now its OK"

Sounds like they lack enough inspectors or have a look the other way attitude.  

On the rare occasion they catch a violation here they've been known to make them take the entire unpermitted part down completely.

Some more of the blatant breaches get that treatment,  there was a famous one where a farmer wanted to build but he knew it would be rejected,    the rules here give you 12 years and then you get a free pass if your not caught,  so he made a huge square wall of hay bales and built inside hoping that no one would see it before the 12 years were up,   he got caught.

Very easy to be caught,  but you cant make anonymous reports so that puts a lot of people off reporting.  

The contrast between the light and the dark makes it look very impressive.
