Hello. I did some tests with 16:9 vs. 1:1 video and stills and it is obvious that the sensor aspect ratio in Pocket 3 is somewhere close to 4:3.
The math is simple, as it can record video 4k wide (3840px) and 3k tall (3096px). I did an experiment by taking a picture of the very same thing in both 16:9 and 1:1 modes and here is the result:
DJI4x3.jpg

This proves the max you could get from this sensor would be a 4:3 aspect ratio footage, theoretically 3840 x 3096 px. I know there might be performance limitations but still I would love to see a 4:3 recording mode in Pocket 3 which would utilize the whole sensor area. If it's not full res but downscaled, I would not mind.
For now I need to use the 1:1 mode if I want to record a single video and use it for both horizontal and vertical platforms. However, this brings unnecessary crop to my horizontal video in such case.
Please DJI, bring the 4:3 mode in the future firmware update.

It would be perfect for people recording materials that later are cropped to both vertical and horizontal aspect ratios for different social media. Something similar to what GoPro has right now.

Yes, exactly. I think GoPro has 5:4 mode. There is also 4:3 mode in DJI Osmo Action 4, which can do 3840 x 2880 px. It would really be great to see something similar on Pocket 3. And if Action 4 can do it, then Pocket 3 can do it as well, I believe

The sensor is 5:4. It would be nice if it used that full sensor and allowed for open gate filmmaking with reference lines for different aspect ratios (I shoot 2:1 and 1:1). I had already submitted this feedback in the forum so one can hope.

FYI, what is interesting is that 3K square, on the OP3, is a higher resolution than 4k 16:9..

You are right, 5:4 is much closer to 3840*3096 than 4:3.
In any case, that open gate filmmaking would be awesome. And various reference lines would make it perfect

Yes. The good news is they just added reference lines in the setting with the latest update. The bad news is it’s only 2.35:1. Now all we need is to be able to shoot in Full Sensor Mode (5:4), with a choice of reference lines for either 2.35:1, 2:1, 16:9, 3:2, 4:3 and 1:1. Did I miss any? In theory it sounds great, but the one big downside to Full Sensor mode is that you wouldn't be able to use the full size of the display which is 16:9, so sensor sized display would be smaller.

About not using the full sensor size - I wish there would be another option which would allow you to choose how to use the display. If to fit the whole recording video on the screen, which will bring the empty black stripes on sides, or if to crop to full screen size (from any mode).
Personally, I wish to record in the 5:4 mode, but see the 16:9 area on the screen, to utilize it fully. As primarily I make videos for YouTube (horizontal) and after that I make some reels and shorts from the same footage.

I miss the 4:3 aspect ratio in photography mode on the OP3, I hope that in the near future DJI updates this detail that it doesn't have and is sorely missed.

You must remember that with a larger image the quality of the recordings will decrease, because the bitrate is not made of rubber

Unfortunately none of my requested features were added. I'm disappointed after waiting for so long. I need to ask DJI for employment to code it myself
Jokes aside, I still hope my requested features will come in the future. As well as better exposure metering, as that's a thing that is bothering me recently after using Pocket 3 more and more.

It seems that DJI doesn’t pay attention to user feedback at all.
After waiting for more than three months, only a few functions have been added.
I think it’s because Pocket 3 is selling so well that even if it doesn’t add new features, people will still pay for it!
Just increasing the photo ratio, customizing the white balance... Are these most basic functions so difficult?
Really a bit disappointed!

I'm using insta360 ace pro. It's a great action camera. It has the free frame which shoots at 4:3 which allows to crop for 16:9 or 9:16 for usage.

I would buy dji pocket 3 if there is 4:3 video recording capability. I see there's still no software updates in regards to this aspect ratio.

The reason it's not a thing on the Pocket 3 is because there would be vignetting in the corners. You can tell because in photo mode, the images are still 16:9, not 4:3 like any other camera. Even your phone supports using the full sensor in photo mode. No software update will adjust the lens. The gimbal would have to be even bigger than it currently is. It sucks but it is what it is.

Yeah, that explanation sounds reasonably. Still there are use cases which would be OK with vignetting. I use OP3 for photogrammetry, which would greatly benefit from larger FoV. I can also imagine people using vignetting as a cool effect for their photos and videos. I undestand that some regular users might not like vignetting, but adding an option into settings with "Give me full sensor even if it does not look perfect", which would be turned off by default, might be a solution. I really hope this gets implemented.
