Old Power Plant - Kearny, NY

This morning was asked to do some road observations. It was right across the street from a power generation plant. High Wires like a maze of strings all over thsi area, helped me honemy flying skills. The Plant was built in 1923 and Thomas Edison helped with it.

Nice shot! I wouldn't want to get caught flying around all those cables though.

I had to Call PSE and G.  I was asked to shoot the roads there by the state. They actually worked with me to shoot the area safely. They gave me high power line maps and heights. It was in Class B airspace. I got clearance to 250 ft. The highest poles were 210 ft. It was a bit challenging, but it was done safely and with permission. There were Airplanes and helicoptors above ma and wires below me.

Awesome! That's good to hear that they were so accommodating. I like the Black and White perspective too.

It's ugly in color.

Awesome monochrome shot Charlie.    Plenty of wires everywhere no doubt testing your flying skills to obtain this shot.  Interesting that Thomas Edison has ties to the power plant.  

Nicely retro, even the trucks seem old.

Anobstacle course for drones   Nice monochrome image.  Those chimney/towers look ripe for demolition.

Cracking shot Charles,  but the power cables look a bit of a hazard.

I almost gave this job back. I had to cross dozens of lines for the job., while staying under 250 ft for FAA Authorization in class B airspace.  I called the energy company who gave me maps and pole heights for clearance. 5 miles of roads had to be captured for  state road renovation project. PSE and G was very cooperative and even volunteered on of their people to escort me if I needed it. I actually feared flying close to the lines for magnetic interference, but I got the facts from the company before flying.

I always fly over power lines as Ive had some interesting effects from walking under them in the past,    one site I visited standing under the power lines bluetooth and cell service were stopped,  and the thought that you can light a neon tube under a power line is enough to avoid it

Yes I read an article from a utility company before flying This. I called the author  That worked  fort the company. She put me in touch with an engineer who gave me an employee to assist in safety. Pilot institute gave me some data and the employee of the utility company gave me what I needed to complete the job safely. This was a learning experience. A little nerve wracking too.

Thanks, It's not that attractive in color. Sometimes industrial areas look better to me in Black and white.
