Immersed among the centuries-old trees, the Camino castle dominates the ancient village from above and contributes to designing one of the most easily recognizable hilly profiles of the Lower Monferrato. Its structure is characterized by a crenellated body, topped by a quadrangular tower which offers a splendid view of the Po plain and the Alps. The castle can be reached from the town of Camino via a tree-lined avenue which heralds all the beauty visible from the top of the hill. The origins of the castle date back to the 11th century, when the large building was erected for defensive purposes, but the changes in ownership between then and now have not been that many: having become a property of the Marquises of Monferrato, the Camino Castle was administered by Gastaldo family. In the 13th century, the Marquis Teodoro Paleologo granted the investiture of the castle to Tommaso and Francesco Scarampi: the Scarampi family lived here until 1952, when the manor was handed over to the Somaschi fathers, and then saw the succession of other private owners, up to the current . The conversion of the castle, over the centuries, from a defensive fortress to a noble residence has left signs that are still appreciable today, such as the presence of a library, a theater and frescoed rooms depicting the events of Don Quixote.
