I almost flew smack into a set of powerlines, several years ago, with the Phantom4 I had at the time.
Brought me out in a cold sweat at just how close to disaster I'd been.
I always avoided them. I had a job with an address out in Kearny which is an industrial area. I accepted it thinking it was a video of a warehouse. This is a second section of rout 1 and 9 and it surrounds the PSE and G power plant which has been there for 100 years. All surrounding roads. There are 17 places where the high power lines cross the roads I had to document. I had clearance by the FAA to 250 ft and the poles went as high as 210 ft. The contractor wanted me as low as possible. It didn't make sense. The energy company was very helpful. The sent me a map with heights and offered to escort. I took the maps and their advice on distances from certain areas . I used my Visual observer to spot wires and stayed close VLOS. |
