Amazing how many old boats are just left to rot in the sea.

I like that. Looks very artistic from the topdown.
But this business of abandoned wrecks is an epidemic, isn't it.

I wonder if it's just my little corner of the coast,  or it's a larger issue.

If that recent series on TV is anything to go by, yours is by no means the only estuary with the same problem.  Professional divers clearing up the messes around the coast of Britain. I think it was on Yesterday channel or somesuch.

Nice,   Ive just finished the chores at the MIL,   and disappointed everyone as the trial camera only captured a fox.

Great shot DA.    Sad that there are so many abandoned and rotting boats in your area.  Here it seems they get tagged and towed fairly quickly.  They are quick here to fine you and charge you for having the boat towed or salvaged.  This has helped to diminish the amount of abandoned boats.

We have the same issue here. Eventually they get towed to a ship graveyard which is fun to look at.  I think they sit here until someone is funded to move them. Some of them never get moved.

No I have a couple of wildlife trail cameras that we leave around the MIL fields to see what we can capture.    Usually we get dear, rabbits, foxes and from time to time weve captured a pack of badgers.

I suspect a lot of these wrecks have been there for 50 years or more.

That's a really long time for them to just sit there and rot and become eye sores.

Cheers H,    it's the plastic boats that get abandoned that upset more than these.

Wood seems to last a long time in salt water.

One of the primary reasons why wood submerged in water doesn’t rot is the absence of oxygen. Wood rot occurs when fungi and bacteria break down the cellulose and lignin components of wood through oxidation.  In submerged or waterlogged conditions, there’s little to no oxygen available for these microorganisms to thrive. As a result, the wood remains well-preserved.  Saltwater can further enhance the preservation of wood underwater. The high salt content of seawater creates an even less hospitable environment for rot-causing microorganisms. As a result, wooden shipwrecks in saltwater environments have a higher likelihood of remaining intact.

True that, at least the wood decays in a natural way, having less negative impact on nature..

It sure seems like it.  It still baffles me a bit as to how many boats get abandoned in your area.  Here they are required to have the registration numbers prominently displayed on them so if you abandon it they will tow it and give you a fine to include the costs of towing fees.  I guess they are just trying to keep the waterways as spotless as possible for all the millions of tourists that come through Florida.

They only seem to get moved if they became a danger to the water way,    there was a documentary about them removing some in the London area and it turned out to be a lot of work,  probably as they left them there so long.

No doubt that could be a time consuming and costly job to remove many of the abandoned boats, especially those that have deteriorate so badly they would fall apart during the salvage operation.

It is a great reason of concern. There is a bit of hope though. Some research has found out a type of bacteria that can consume and decompose plastic matter. I hope that and all the other things done to help the problem could easen it up. but there certainly is a lot of work to do.

Nicely done yet again DAF. Makes you wonder about circumstances that lead to walking away from such a large asset.

Didn't remember it outright, but did some searching on the Internet and found this article: https://www.livescience.com/plastic-eating-bacteria

According to that article, the scientific name of the bacteria is Ideonella sakaiensis.
