The dead, cut stalks look like what's left after a maize harvest.  A good bit of muck spreading, then hopefully a bit of rain to wash it into the soil. Ploughing next I expect.

Thats what I expected otherwise that pipe would be damaging the crop.

The farmers in France generally towed a slurry trailer behind the tractor rather than pumping the slurry all the way from the holding tanks.

Not sure if it's related to that,  but the slurry rules here changed recently to use a method thats less smelly.   Or so I was told.

For Pete's sake, it's countryside, and arable land at that. That's like folk complaining about cocks crowing when they buy their dream home in the country and don't like the noises/smells/etc that come with it.
I kid you not - my ex French neighbour ( a former townie) actually complained to the Mairie that the farmer who owned the surrounding fields was not doing enough to prevent moles from burrowing into his garden and ruining the lawn.
