Crazy spinning of the Mimo App window when biking.

My Android smartphone is mounted on my bike handle, and I'm attempting to use the Osmo Pocket 3 through the DJI Mimo app.
However, this workflow is proving to be impossible.

The app window won't maintain a locked orientation; instead, it's spinning uncontrollably for the whole time.
It doesn't just switch from landscape to portrait mode but also flips the UI unexpectedly.

This occurs even when I lock the screen orientation in the display settings of my Android phone; it overrides it.
I can't find any settings within the app to force it to lock onto a specific orientation mode.

Pull out your phone > swipe down from the top of the screen to reveal the settings/notification shade > look for the Screen Orientation/Auto Rotate toggle and set it to lock/off.

Pull out your phone > swipe down from the top of the screen to reveal the settings/notification shade > look for the Screen Orientation/Auto Rotate toggle and set it to lock/off.

The mimo app seems to be unaffected by that settings.
I'll try to record a video later in the day to show the issue.

I saved you the trouble... hopefully a DJI admin will take a look.  It's an issue on both my phone and tablet as well.  Screen Orientation lock does not correct the issue.  I would say you won't notice it as much unless you're moving on say a scooter, bike, etc...
This portrait/landscape orientation flip flop is happening with me barely moving my phone back and forth.

Hi, there. We're sorry for the inconvenience that it may cause you. May I confirm whether this phenomenon happens even if the mobile device is in a stationary position? If so, please provide the model of your device, operating system, and app version. I hope to hear from you soon.

For me:

Xiaomi Mi 11 Lite 5G
Mi Ui 14.0.8
Mimo App v1.11.4

iPad Mini 6
iOS 17.2
Mimo App v1.11.4

Both devices exhibit the same behavior, the orientation lock does NOT stop the Mimo app from rotating at the slightest motion.

Hello, there. Thank you for your patience. We've received the feedback from our corresponding team. Please know that the DJI Mimo will identify the current mobile phone orientation through the mobile phone sensor data and adjust the display mode in the app. However, the UI adaptive display orientation may vary due to the different interaction modes of different products.

The DJI Mimo will directly call the mobile phone sensor data to identify the orientation and will not be affected by the mobile phone’s “orientation lock” or “auto rotation” settings. The spinning of the Mimo app UI does not affect the final video taken by Pocket 3, as long as the Pocket 3 keeps it stable. Please be assured that we've taken your feedback for future reference. I hope this information helps. Thank you for your support.

Hi, there. the DJI Mimo will identify the current mobile phone orientation through the mobile phone sensor data and adjust the display mode in the app. This App UI will spin if the bumps during biking cause the phone's current attitude to be abnormally acquired. We hope for your understanding.

Understood...

However, when you are using the Mimo app on your phone or tablet in non stable conditions, it makes the app unusable as it constantly is switching landscape to vertical due to the movement of the phone/tablet.

Please ask the Mimo engineers if they can add a software on/off function that will respect the orientation lock of the device.

New DJI user here and I've just encountered this after mounting my Action 4 on my helmet and attempting to use the phone mounted in a damped cradle on the handlebar. Absolutely impossible! The app swivels and rotates like a whirling dervish and there is no way you're gonna be able to hit the record button with behaviour like this. It makes the app totally impossible to use.

The camera may be the mutt's nuts but this behaviour plus the app only kind of half working in landscape mode makes the whole recording experience really rubbish and I wish I'd kept my GoPro 12☹️

Terrible DJI!

This has been out there for many years.

You do magical technology.

But you as strong as your weakest link.

This is easy to fix.

But without the fix. MIMO is useless for me.

Please do the easy stuff and fix it.

This problem exists on any phone using MIMO.
Not just bumpy motorcycles.

Try it for yourself.

Hold your phone in portrait mode straight up in front of your face.
Bend over and  rotate the phone down past flat and the mimo app turns upside down.

Similarly place the phone flat and tilt it a bit in any direction.
The orientation of the app will change.
Notwithstanding the fact that the your view of your eyes to the phone has not.

I sense what your dev's are trying to do.
Monitor the gyro and and automatically just the orientation of the app.
This is a flawed approach at best.
yes you know the orientation oof the phone.
But you don't know the orientation of my eyes and
so you are just guessing at it.
Some times you are right and a lot of the time you are wrong,
180 degree wrong!

Moreover, Android provides management of this feature at the OS level.
You can lock orientation or have it auto rotate.

Your developers have exerted extra effort to actively subvert this standard Android behavior.
End users suffer because of your developers' willfulness.

Did you know that every time your developers automatically rotate the screen in a direction
that is out of synch with my eyes  a kitten dies.
Shame on you DJI.
You've killed so many kittens!

What do you need to do?
Either follow the Android default behavior (which is configurable).
Or provide settings that are configurable so users can opt in to your craziness (ie lock orientation. auto orient, etc)

This issues has been out there for a long time.
There are many threads on this.
You have either ignored them or said this is a feature not a bug.

You do great tech, but it is only as strong as weakest link.
This makes MIMO almost useless for anyone who is moving around.

Above you asked us to "Rest Assured".
That was 2 years ago.
Alot of rest on the part of DJI.
Very little assurance for MIMO users.
I don't know why you are choosing to ignore this significant issue.
Particularly when it is so easy to fix.

It just seems willful and petty on your part,

DJI is better than this.

I have the same issue, on my motorcycle while driving and the mimo app through the vibrations it's starts to rotate wild and cannot control the pocket 3.

Device is a Samsung S22. I can reproduce the issue by shaking the phone by hand.

Fixing this issue could be so simple like a button to toggle to disable auto rotation or a menu entry for doing that (maybe also a setting to lock in landscape or portrait), it can be very easy, like this:

If(!rotationBlockActive)  {
//put here the code for auto rotation....
} else {
//do nothing
}

In Android 10+ the sensors can be deactivated over the developer settings menu and the mimo app should read then zero values when accessing the gyroskope values. Workaround when dji needs years to fix this little issue.

It's a so ridiculous thing to correct that can be made in 5 minutes in one hand and drinking a coffee with the other one.

For iOS, DJI certainly did something like this (in swift)

  1. import CoreMotion

  2. let motionManager = CMMotionManager()

  3. func startMonitoringDeviceOrientation() {
  4.     if motionManager.isDeviceMotionAvailable {
  5.         motionManager.deviceMotionUpdateInterval = 0.1
  6.         motionManager.startDeviceMotionUpdates(to: .main) { (data, error) in
  7.             if let attitude = data?.attitude {
  8.                 // Use attitude.pitch and attitude.roll to determine orientation
  9.                 // Update your UI accordingly
  10.             }
  11.         }
  12.     }
  13. }
Copy the code
Apple (which is not laughing with privacy) will surely be happy to be informed that DJI found a way to override the system-wide orientation lock

Hi,
There's no scenario in which Mimo app has the right to override the choice of the user to lock the app in a position he needs.
Please do something FAST as we cannot be patient anymore.

Hi Gamora,

It's is not a recommandation, it's an issue information as the Mimo app is useless 60% of the time.  DJI don't let other company to develop other apps. So we are stuck with you.
In our company we are faithful to DJI products since the F450 Drone !
Do we have to move to other companies like GoPro or Insta360 for our cameras ?

Still an issue and now with foldable phones trying to use the bigger screen is a pain, how long does it take to program an rotation default in app? Why are you deciding how to show us the screen instead of letting use decide for our use case?
