Cemetery description
The German war cemetery Lommel is located in the Flemish region of Belgium in the province of Limburg. The 16 hectare complex, which is a listed building, is divided into 63 fields with up to 28 rows and 640 graves. There are almost 20,000 crosses in the cemetery, on both sides of which the names, dates of life and grave number of two fallen soldiers are documented.
Occupancy
Of the 39,111* buried in Lommel, 13,000 were originally unknown. To date, the Volksbund has been able to subsequently clarify the fates of almost 7,000 people. The soldiers buried there died primarily during the fighting in Belgium and western Germany, especially near Aachen, in the Hürtgen Forest and at the Remagen bridgehead.
*The largest American cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer, Normandy "only" counts 9388 graves.
for each soldier burried on this location I have only spend 0.0056 seconds in this video...
Thanks. And still there are graves added to this location. Here three remains of German soldiers, found a few years ago(they first try to find out who they where and try to find living relatives. that is why it takes so long), are buried.
Very nicely flown and documented. Just a sad reminder of the devastation of waging war. Hopefully, they will be able to identify even more of the soldiers in the future.
