Yes, I was quite surprised at reading the differences.  Summer breaks tend to be really hard on working parents.  Seems the parents split taking vacation time to try and cover the summer breaks so that somebody is home with the kids.  There are also a lot of summer camps available such as baseball, karate, band, etc.  No doubt some kids have no parental oversight during parts of the summer break when both parents work.  I believe they are still called latchkey kids.  Shame but sometimes parents can't find an alternative.

I guess you can do that in a small country.  Would be a bit of a drive for parents in Florida to take their kids to the grandparents in say Chicago.  Over a 1,300 mile drive or about 25 hours diving time.

Yeah, and that was only a short drive.  From southern Florida to southern California is over 2,650 miles and 38 hours driving time.  Not something I'd like doing very often, especially with the price of gasoline at this time.

We think gas is high here but compared to when I was stationed in several overseas countries I found out how much gas cost there.  Regular gas here is currently $3.29 per gallon.  I'm betting the price for gas in the Netherlands is over $2 US dollars per liter.

I met a couple last week from Guam.  They landed in California in early January and rented a Class C RV.  They motored through parts of the western US and eventually made it here to Florida.  The dad said they rented the RV because it would be cheaper since they wouldn't have to pay motel bills or for restaurant bills.  The RV was laid out really nice and sleep 6.  He said he averaged 17 mpg.  Along the way they stopped at National Parks that had RV Parks so they could fill their water tanks and drop off sewer and gray water.  The whole family seemed to really be enjoying the tirp.
