One day they'll produce some that don't require a tether that will be affordable for consumer use. I've seen a few commercial ones but they cost twice what a new car would cost.

I think they are priced like that because these companies are targeting sales toward government entities with big budgets. Maybe in a few years the prices might come down.

I checked out a couple of the companies and it seems they used government funding to support their research and development. After successful protoypes the federal government cut a contract for procurement of twenty of these underwater drones at exorbitant prices. Seems like a bit unfair but what can you do.
