It's amazing how many containers these ships can carry

Superb series of shots RR.

Considering how high they can stack the containers it is amazing the ship doesn't roll right over.  This is a shot of the largest capacity container ship at the present time and she has containers stacked as high as I've ever seen.

There are as many or more containers in the hull below the visible stacks

What I don't get is what they stack them in single columns instead of layering each row at ninety degrees to make them stable

The article states that this container ship is configured to stack as many as 22 containers high, starting below decks and rising to the top.  So with 15 high showing above decks in the picture that would only leave room for 7 below decks.  Of course the article could be totally wrong but they were quoting the ship's manufacturer.

i'm guessing it is because of the support structures that mean they can only stack them one way.  Here's a shot of the MSC Irina with no cargo onboard so you can see the above deck support structure.

My guess was wrong.
Seven deep down below would be about right given the draft of the vessel.
But you can be assured that the weight of cargo and ballast down below would be sufficient to ensure stability.

That picture is deceptive.
That photo of MSC Irina above has containers stacked extra high along  the outer edges for display purposes, but it would never go to sea like  that.
They could only stack 11 high without blocking the forward view from the bridge and the stacks further forward would be lower to give at least some forward view.

But photos of these 24000TEU ships only show 10-high stacks in normal use.
Like this one:

Containers on the upper levels are likely to be empties or containing lightweight cargo.

True, as no doubt the heaviest containers must go in first to keep it from being top heavy.  It's just a marvel at how many containers they can haul.  These monster container ships keep the receiving ports busy no doubt.

Have you ever seen how they load/unload containers?
It wouldn't be possible if they were alternated as you mentioned.
Container ships stop at several ports on each voyage and have to be able to easily unload containers at each port and load others.

It's still a ship-load of containers

It certainly is.  It seems they can move a ton of containers these days compared to just 6 years ago.

Very nice captures. Really amazing how these things don't fall over given how high they normally stack them.

Nice views around the container port. Those ships always look top-heavy, don't they.

They certainly do. I thought they might put the heaviest containers to the bottom, but then realised they would have to load them in the order they have to be unloaded, and there might be several ports to visit

The txt comes from the srt file.
You could either delete the .srt file or put the video file in a folder without the srt file..
