Hey guys, I need help with my rs3 mini gimbal, my shots aren't steady and it's hard to keep my subject in the center of the frame when I orbit.
Here is my setup so you can troubleshoot:
- GH5 with IBIS off (not totally off as I find that it's more stable verticallywith the first setting still on, compared to off, after running different tests. The GH5 IBIS compensates in a good way for up and down motion, which isn't corrected by the gimbal)
- RS3 mini with the Smallrig Briefcase Handle
- For this test I'm using a 16mm Sigma lens (so, equivalent to 32mm full frame, because GH5 is MFT). So it's decently wide, not at all telephoto, and should be easier in theory to adjust the framing on the go while I move.
Everytime I use the gimbal, I make sure to make the calibration "excellent" on every axis. I also auto-tune the gimbal before use.
My gimbal is mounted in contact laterally on the right with the gimbal (the lateral setting you can adjust with the small red handle, next to the grey one you use to mount the camera on the gimbal).
Here are my settings inside the RS3 for an orbit shot :
Follow speed : 15, as it's the easiest setting for me for a slow orbit shot. If I want a faster orbit shot I will go much higher, depending on the needed speed of the shot. But for slow speeds is where I have the most problems being steady.
Deadband : high
Inside the "control" settings in the bottom, there is :
In the pan tab : deadband high / max speed medium / smoothness high
In the tilt tab : deadband high / max speed medium / smoothness high
In the roll tab : deadband high / max speed medium / smoothness high.
Anyway, if I understand correctly, these settings located inside the "control" submenu are only applied to the joystick movements, so since I don't use that, it doesn't really matter what I put in there.
Now, when I try to do my orbit shot, pointing the camera at the subject and walking around it (doing it like the Brandon Li video where he explains it), I do my ninja walk, the camera doesn't bounce up and down very much, so I'm "gliding" pretty well, however the hard part is keeping the subject framed in the center !
The gimbal is alternating between lagging behind a little bit late, and correcting its trajectory by doing a sudden move which puts the camera too much ahead of where I point.
So my subject is moving from left to the right relatively to the center of the frame and it looks super weird because the gimbal seems to autocorrect the fact that it's lagging behind by doing sudden movements.I thought maybe this is because I have too much deadband, because the camera seems to be lagging behind in the first place for that very reason (high deadband), but with a medium or low setting for deadband, now the camera is shakier and overall less stable.
How do I do it ?
