Just a thought, took a couple of stills pics in my garden no problem! but later, while off over the forrest recoding vid, I thought I would stop the flight and hover, and hit the stills pic button. Nothing, kept on recording vid, but no stills, do you have to stop the vid frist before the still side of things work ?

No you cannot.. Its a bummer really.. What you can do though is if filming in 4K, take frame captures ( using something like MPC-HC - https://mpc-hc.org/ ). Its quite good quality..

Unfortunately we don't have this function yet

I expect you can see this vastly over populated area I live in, and the shouts of the crowds, shouting shoot that drone down, rings in my ears !  I was thinking of distributing army helmets, in the event it drops from the sky and hits someone in the crowds demonstrating outside my shoe box where I live i!

Not so fast Tim.

The DJI Pilot app version 1.2 and P3P firmware 1.1.9 allowed you to be recording video and take still shots at the same time.

One of the many reasons I haven't up graded my Phantom. I probably should do the upgrade as I'm using my Nikon D810 for all of my aerial stills.
