Hello everyone!

I'm surprised that I haven't found a single post about this here, so I decided I should write about it. The thing is, in Germany, it’s not so straightforward to know where you can fly and where you can't, and relying on DJI's GEO Zones is practically impossible. But! Despite this, Germany has an excellent app that solves all these problems, and the police use it to determine the legality of flights. Here are a few comparisons:


One of my first flights was near the city of Bonn when I wanted to capture Schloss Drachenburg - an incredibly beautiful castle on a hill. I checked the GEO Zone in DJI and made sure there were no restrictions.

Very soon, the administration of the place came running and asked me to land the drone. As it turned out, the police were already on their way. That's when I learned about a website called Dipul Map Tool, which opened my eyes to the flight zones:

And it becomes even more interesting when I see that there is a lot marked here, besides the nature reserve zone where I was flying, and this was indicated on the website:

Now I would like you to compare these two map screenshots of one city - Bonn. You will see just how significant the difference is:

In conclusion, I highly recommend using this website for planning flights in Germany, as people here won’t hesitate for a minute to call the police to check on you. There are many beautiful places here, but you must follow the laws. Fly safely and without accidents! Goodbye!

Dont use DJI's fly safe database to decide where to fly,   due to the EASA changes,  they no longer populate it and are waiting for the various countries to make their own map data available.

That’s what I’m talking about. Even elif you go to official LBA website for FAQ about drones there is “diplo” web site listed as the only one place to look for allowed zones to fly.

EASA maintain the list of official sites per country here,  nothing else IMHO can be trusted.

And how did it end? Had to pay a fine. I've also been there and there are signs in several places that you shouldn't fly drones there

In my case, there was no fine. The police were polite and cooperative. They understood that I had a misunderstanding about the geo zones and explained everything to me. Moreover, they showed me that they have their own drones, which they use to monitor people and drone pilots. If I'm not mistaken, it was a Mavic 3 Enterprise with a speaker attached.

You might also try the droniq app. I just had a look at the dipul map tool and compared it to the droniq app for an area that I know and where I live.

Very funny:
In the dipul map tool I see a Radio Tower where I am sure I m not allowed to fly but they don't show any restrictions.
In the droniq app that same Tower is correctly marked as prohibited with a 100m radius.

I allways check the droniq app on my smartphone before a flight and so far it always looked quite plausible in what it shows.

That's the app I'm using as well, I can absolutely recommend it.

Not to point out that you didn't know where you weren't allowed to fly. But I thought that you, as a Drone operator, knew about the regulations, and also this page that you found out, describes what you must as a Drone operator in Germany. I live very close to the German border, and knew the website well, as I have been in Northern Germany from time to time, and also brought the Drone to film.  
DIPUL (Digital Platform for Unmanned Aviation) as the site is called, is quite detailed about flying with a Drone.

One nice feature about DIPUL is that you can also ask questions to acutal people/experts (via "Kontakt"). I posted a few questions regarding specific geographic zones and they were answered competently. I also pointed out a missing restriction zone and it was corrected and added to the tool swiftly.
While it certainly helps to double-check with Droniq or similar (or apply common sense), Dipul should get you a long way regarding plausible deniablity. If you can proove that the government official site does not indicate a no-fly-zone, you should definately be able to avoid fines or (even better) convince people challenging you that flying here is, indeed, legal.
Dipul works great from the mobile phone, too.

Droniq with account. Choose match Drone and it works very well. Even NOTAM. You get response on screen and list of rules/allows/restrict/warning. Dipul and a printout I use only when somewhere special or tricky distances. I contact also Droniq one time that they shut better granular for 249g  - like missunderstood Industriegebiet is not automatic Industrieanlage etc. Liebe Grüße aus der Nähe von Bielefeld.

It is still more recent / updated than the EASA website, quick and easy way to find out where to fly per country. The easa site also has a lot of sites to exams/registrations per country but as soon as you’re registered in your own country you are allowed to fly all over Europe?

https://dronemaps24.org and the Droniq app are the most accurate sources from my experience. But no source is absolutely error free, so I usually compare those two.

DJI's Map is absolute crap ... sorry, DJI.
