I am currently working on using photos from the Phantom 3 drone to create 3D models of the pictures. The program used to do this takes in the location, photo angle, and altitude to cross the pixels from each of the pictures to create a model. However, this takes many pictures to create a full model.

My goal: I want to use all of the pictures that make up a video to create a model so that the program will have more photos to access.

My problem: The format of the photos in the video do not have all of the necessary data for the program to work.

My question: How can I get the data from the pictures that make up a video, and make a 3D model from these?

I appreciate any advice!

Thanks,

Nate

I don't know of any EXIF data in video. I think in the past the camera has been pretty busy just recording the "frame" data.
Would be nice.
As the EXIF data also has GPS coordinates and other info, it might require special firmware to do that or a different UAV/camera.
What might be do-able is rapid fire photos.
How many pics/second would you need?

From a photographers point of view, if its EXIF data photos you're after, and your UAV can take a 2kg payload, then I'd advise using a Canon 7D Mk2. It shoots RAW at 10 frames per second with a max burst of 31 shots (onto a CF card). Or it will shoot infinite jpg in burst mode. Other than that, if you use VLC Player, you can capture PNG files from a screen grab. Of course the photos won't be as good as RAW files, but they're still pretty decent.

I don't know what would be realistic, but I can't imagine we would need any more than ten per second.

There's a setting, don't remember where that basically tells the video to create a subtitle file.  In that file is shows GPS reading, barameter etc.

It's only updated 1/second though don't know if that would help, but if it's good enough, you could write a script to parse the data out and push it into the EXIF data in the images.

Here's 1 element:

Be aware that the image produced by the P3 camera is not linear, at least in the horizontal direction.  That is, 1 pixel will cover a certain area in the middle of the image and much more area on the edges.  I mentioned this in a similar thread last night.
