Thanks, yeah, I was racing to get in the air when I saw the rainbow while filling up the dieseltank.

Nice that you were able to document the watertower while it still existed.

Really, why is that?

In order to have a rainbow, you need these two things: sunlight and raindrops.  We get plenty of sun but not a lot of rain and when it does rain it pours really hard and rarely creates a rainbow.  When I was stationed in Hawaii it rained a lot so I saw rainbows often and even a couple of double rainbows.  Guess that is why Hawaii earned the nickname Rainbow State.

I don't mind the rains with a thunderstorm but I'm always leery of the lightning that can come with it.

True.
We have been lucky so far, but others close by have not.

True.

About three weeks back during a heavy thunderstorm.  I was looking out and saw a very bright flash accompanied by a really loud noise.  A bolt of lightning struck a big oak tree about 15 meters behind my boat dock.

It caught on fire instantly but fortunately the pouring rain put the fire out right away.  The next day I had to get out the chain saw and dispose of the burnt wood and the stump.

Yeah, I wonder what would have happened then.

The metal components of my boat (like the mast, railings, and electronic devices) can provide a path for the lightning strike.  The electromagnetic pulse (EMP) from the strike can destroy electronic devices such as my navigation systems, radios, etc.  I do have a proper lightning protection systems installed.  I also keep full insurance coverage on the boat.

I also have a large metal flag pole mounted about 40 feet from my boat that will hopefully serve as a lightning attractor for any bolts hitting nearby.
