The over exposure (OE) indicators can be very useful if you manually adjust your camera setting to your liking for a given condition. I photograph lots of boats at speed in the harsh Fla sun and use this kind of indicator to keep me in the sweet spot. In my camera preview screen I want to see a small amount OE indication in white areas like water spray from under the hull or gunnels here, a white cloud but not the whole cloud or all of the water. The Zebras can be a good thing. You can recover in post easier from over exposure than under exposure. Here I had speckled indicators in the water spray and the gunnels. 400 ISO, 1800, f/6.3 300mm.
