The oldest continual operating steam locomotives in the US is the The Norfolk and Western 475 and is a steam locomotive from 1906. It currently operates on the Strasburg Rail Road and was the shooting site for the 200 film "Thomas and the Magic Railroad,"

There are some older engines still in use.

They were both purchased to replace the fleet of steam engines that was still in use.

Yeah, I love that.
The engineers don't btw. They prefer the newer engines with more comfort and power. However, the electronics can be a problem.

On this side of the pond it seems the railroad lines prefer diesel electric.
