Lovely shot DA.    It would be interesting to know why the passenger count would be off by one each trip.

I thought it might have been a burial at sea but then again when I zoomed in I didn't see an urn with ashes or even an empty urn.

Its ashes,  they drop them over the side,   theres at least 3 boats Ive seen advertising to do it and for the most part it's always a non white religion.

Hey DA', interesting shot, you took it with no one looking up, that's usually a first.

I think they might have been praying.

That's a good one!   It's also interesting because I feel the public's verdict on drones is still very questionable and uncertain of it's value. When drones help to save lives, it's kinda' expected but when some dingbat flies over a stadium we all hear it.

This is the joys of having a mini drone and flying one a motor boat with loud diesel engines running.

It was very popular in 2020 and 2021, not so much lately.

The Navy gets lots of tasks for both burial at sea and spreading ashes at sea of veterans and retirees.

How does that work.   Special boats dedicated to those jobs?

Well, each to their own, I suppose.

Its got to be an easy job for him,  safety briefing (hopefully),    drives boat out to see,    they say a few words and chuck them over,    he drives back and shows them off the boat.   Done.

Usually it is a smaller Navy ship such as a Frigate and they rotate that tasks so it is not always the same ship having to get underway.

And do they take the family out for a ceremony.

And do they take the family out for a ceremony.

Unless the ship is going to go on a long cruise immediately following the burial at sea ceremony then the families are invited onboard for the trip out and back.

Cremated ashes must be scattered in a location at least 3 nautical miles (3.45 statute miles or 5.556 km) from land.  For non-cremated remains, the ocean water must be at least 600 feet (183 meters) deep at the burial site.

I assume for the non-cremated they must add some weights and other measures?

Some are buried in a coffin and weight is added at the foot end of the coffin.  If no coffin is used they use a 100% biodegradable burial shroud.  Pebble stones are used at the foot of the shroud for Ballast weight.  I think the minimum is still 160 lbs of stones.
