The drone does not possess obstacle avoidance sensors, which unfortunately led to a crash. Consequently, it is not advisable to operate this drone in forested areas, as the lack of these sensors increases the risk of collision with trees and other obstacles.
It's funny because I'm more confident and less nervous flying the Neo up close in heavily treed areas than my Mini 4 Pro, which has full, 360 degree obstacle avoidance. There are a number of reasons for that.
First, obstacle avoidance isn't 100% perfect. Small branches, wires or even backlit scenarios can confuse it and cause collisions. Obstacle avoidance is not foolproof.
Second, the Mini 4 Pro's propellers and gimbal are largely unprotected and the drone itself carries almost twice the mass of the Neo. If one of the Mini 4 Pro's propellers comes in contact with a branch, it's likely going down and if it goes down, there is a good chance of damage. The Neo's propellers are VERY well protected and its props are less susceptible to damage. Due to that protection the blades are also less likely to grab a branch. Its low mass and curvy design also make it more likely to bounce off obstacles than get caught up in them. I have had several unexpected collisions with the Neo and almost every time it stayed in the air. The one time it hit the ground it was unscathed (knock on wood). I expect this is largely due to its feather light weight and solid protection for the gimbal and propellers.
Third, the Neo is a LOT less expensive than the Mini 4 Pro (and many other drones) so if I do make a mistake and have a serious crash the Neo is going to be cheaper to repair or replace.
I have been flying since the DJI Spark days and my style is all about getting up close to things, so I am coming from a place of personal experience. I have certainly had my share of collisions though - haha! The Neo certainly makes me worry much less about crashing and more about getting the shot.
Happy, safe flying. Cheers! |
