Testing the new DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro on the Reiteralm bike trails in the Austrian alps end of July. Although firmware was not final I was really impressed by the stabilization in low light! As part of the beta testing I had to use auto white balance, not something I'd normally do, but it mostly did a good job anyway. Recorded in 4K 60, HLG, a bit of color correction and noise reduction / sharpening done in FCPX.

Just watched and commented in another thread.

What an exhilarating experience.  The footage is a lot more stable than I expected it would be.  Great job on this video.

A couple of questions please.
Are you filming in 8 or 10 bit HLG ?

When you import into FCP, which encoder are you using. ?

I am having a lot of problems with videos sent to youtube. The results are very muted and do not look HDR, ie bright and vibrant, though they look great as source and in FCP

Just to add to my question above I see on YT HDR on your video playback options, I am not seeing that.

I'm using the Rec2020 HLG colorspace for the project. Make sure to also export in h265 and rec2020 HLG, otherwise YouTube won't recognize it's dealing with an HDR video.

Is there any advantage do you think, of videoing in HLG and working in a rec 709 10 bit space? Reason I ask is that HLG is backwards compatible albeit with a different gamma curve, but I had a go and was surprised at how natural the rec 709 footage looked in the final render!
Looking at your footage on a rec709 screen and it looks really good too. Really rich looking colour.

I find HLG footage easier to grade than DLOG-M and it has similar dynamic range, that's why I'm using it. And of course I just love that I can show the clips directly on my iPhone in HDR!

That’s exactly what I was wondering. I also found it a bit easier but wondered about the highs because the gamma curve is similar at the bottom end to rec709 but gives a more compressed top end.

I was thinking about using it to video in but just treating it as I would rec 709 in post. So, just another colour profile to use, perhaps. For some reason, I found the colour richer than DLog M.

HLG is really interesting because it’s a hybrid and much easier to manage.

The gamma or perceived brightness is similar to more normal video in the dark tones but is curved downwards in the top end so the light values get closer and closer together as it gets brighter. So that means really white becomes ‘’less really white’ and other bright spots are closer to it, giving a smoother top end brightness scale. Easily stretched out if you want to.

I tried it on my camera and really liked the effect and the colour depth it gave, even in poor lighting. I played a clip straight from the camera with no editing and indeed on an HDR TV, it switched in and looked really nice. Then I started to wonder how this might translate to normal video. Whether the tonal range would be skewed.

But the nice thing about HLG is that it’s backwards compatible and the extra ‘things’ about it are just ignored by the player and it plays like a standard video. (I think) That’s what I’m interested in. Whether it’s useful as almost another colour profile like D Log M to be tweaked in standard mode and rendered as standard. It has a nice look about it.

how do you get rid of jitters. I went walking outdoors today with my new camera and there were jitters in the footage (from when my feet hit the ground). Yours is smooth as glass!

Yep, I got the same question.

Is HLG sutable also for editing final output on REC709? I ask because not having an HDR monitor i fear i cannot leverage the full potential of the HLG format.
