I went to a small village called Alcoutim in the border between Portugal and Spain, only separated by the Guadiana River.
Alcoutim is the northeasternmost municipality in the Algarve. Far from the crowds and hustle and bustle of the tourist centers on the Algarve coast, Alcoutim is a paradise of tranquility between the Serra do Caldeirão and the Guadiana River, the natural border with neighboring Spain. The region keeps its crafts alive, eminently linked to rural life, with pieces ranging from traditional wool or rag blankets, to cane and wicker baskets, pottery, among many others.
On the banks of the Guadiana River, the history of the town of Alcoutim is closely associated with the fact that it is located where the tides can be felt, which forced boats, which transported the region's products, to wait for hours for the conditions conducive to navigation. However, since ancient times, its strategic position, bordering the neighboring Spanish town of Sanlúcar del Guadiana, required the construction of support and defense structures, of which some remains remain and have become points of interest to visit.
A walk of a few minutes leads to the discovery of centuries-old houses and some monuments such as the Church of Misericórdia and the Castle, where the Archeology Museum Center is located, where you can see the largest set of board games from the Islamic era coming from a unique archaeological site.
