The light wasn't that high early this morning, with mist, but the sun was up there, so I decided to see how the wider dynamic range of the Action 5 helped take some more challenging shots with regards to lighting.

I also wanted to test out its sharpness. I used D-Log M at 60FPS and the camera was in full auto mode.

The new firmware came down yesterday so I used a high bitrate although most likely that these types of shots wouldn't show that so much.

Images looks pleasant to my eyes. How did you set sharpness and NR? Default to 0/0 or -2/-2?

The video looks significantly brighter than it actually was. I had previously been using -2/-2 but for this I set it to -1/-1. I might try out -1 for sharpness but -2 for noise reduction next time. I’ve been finding -2 for sharpness looks good with a lot of movement, but with still shots, where the eye starts to analyse more, I was always sharpening a bit in post. This wasn’t sharpened at all so for still shots, it looks like -1 is more appropriate for me.

I think for moving around, I might go back to -2 though.

TBH, I am surprised at how the camera  dealt with the lighting when the sun was directly in shot. Especially when there was shadow in front as well under the trees. I didn't throw away a single shot. Everything was reproduced nicely. Really excellent for a small sensor so the new processor is doing something!

Yes this is a very good piece of equipment! Hope being able to test it again with new firmware but outside is heavy raining now.

Nice bit of video that Ian.

Thank you. Just a set of stills, but I wanted to see how the camera worked with direct sun and shady areas in the same shot. Also, whether the sharpness was typical action cam over sharpness!

I wish someone made a screw on adapter for filters so that I could get a mist filter on it. I just waited for real mist this morning!

Push on mist same as the new would do but definitely a hole someone should fill, odd it was done for the pocket but the 5 "it’s an action cam"

Yes, the ‘action cam’ thing has probably stopped these kinds of things from being considered or made.

I see it as more than an action cam. It’s a perfectly normal camera with fixed aperture and a really good tool for making excellent images as well as the ‘bone shaker’ videos that many produce on them. It suits action but it has this amazing depth of field along with a potentially amazing picture.

I used to have a tiny little Rollei 35mm film pocket camera years back. I also had a twin lens Mamiya 120 roll film camera and a single lens reflex Mamiya roll film. The Rollei was the most used…. Simple. Good enough quality. Easy to use. Portable. And that was a very long time ago! 40 years ago, probably!!

(I also had 35mm Olympus camera but still much bigger than the Rollei because of its lenses)

So I tend to treat the Action and the Ace as more traditional cameras because for me, their diminutive size is a huge convenience.

Yup I’d agree Ian I think a mist would great for woodland stuff unusual for Freewell not to have picked up on this yet gap in the market.

I must say it did perform great in theese conditions. For me it seems like -2 -2 is looking best, but need to do some fast movement (driving) to see if it will hold up or not.
Btw I loved the scenery you recorded there on your walk

I’m lucky because once I leave the road that my house is on, it’s all around me. The nicest bit is a couple of miles away by the pond.

I really like how it keeps the sun in frame and still gives shadow detail in the trees underneath. I do like the effect of pointing into the sun if the camera lens can do it.
