Just wondering if I take off at 0 fly 300 yards away at 40 feet high and there is a drop in elevation in my field will altitude be measured from my home point or current position? Hope that made sense

Altitude is always based on GL of takeoff location. You will actually see negative values appear if you drop below your takeoff altitude. Hope this answers your question.

Not a dumb question. There have been multiple times I have taken off from a bluff overlooking the lake, flown down to near the lake, and had negative readings on ALT.

Since a ground radar altitude sensor is out of the price range of hobbyists it would be nice if the Video Positioning sensor on the P3A-P could report when it is in range (3 meter) so one could descend say, down to a lake level from above, where visual cues are difficult.

To have altitude read out at the position of the aircraft would need radar on board the bird.
