Djl community representatives, we need you to provide an official response on what is causing DjI Neo to behave erratically. Moreover, we need you to state whether your promotional material showing Neo flying over water is false.

Hi MrDinB,

Thank you for reaching out.  DJI Neo is light and compact, and relies heavily on its vision positioning system for stable flight, especially in environments with no or weak GPS signals. Vision positioning is highly dependent on ambient light and ground textures. In low-light conditions or areas with plain and uniform ground textures, the drone may not be able to hover stably. Therefore, we recommend that you shoot using DJI Neo in environments with ample light and distinct ground patterns.

I hope this information has helped to clarify your inquiries. If you have any other questions, kindly let us know. Thank You!

Should state: in low light conditions lower than the vision positioning systems ability to function you risk loss of control of your Neo.  That is, flying erratically and not responding to user input.

Just a limit of the current version.   Neo is very functional under most outdoors daylight flying conditions. Deep shadow can also engage "autonomous uncontrolled mode".

I was flying outdoor during day time with a lot of textured ground. Therefore, that explanation cannot explain the full extent of the issue.

Just read the DJI Neo Manual again.  First read I just passed over the autonomous flying features.  Notes in Palm Control if the visual positioning system fails the Neo goes automatically into ATTI mode and lands.  Unsure if people not using a controller have experienced the "Autonomous Uncontrollable Mode" (AUM)some of us using various different controller have.   Also noted that in general "Flying near extremely dark (<15 Lux) or bright (>10,000 Lux) surface" is beyond the functional range of the visual sensor system and should automatically engage ATTI mode.  Something is off here.  If not auto landing in ATTI mode we should have some stick input control v. AUM.

So, a fun fact, when I first got Neo it used to do this. It was following me through a trail once and it hit a leaf. The leaf blocked the camera so it landed. I wonder if something changed in the latest firmware which causes Neo not to do this.

Most interesting thing is that you can fly neo in dark indoors and outdoors (I tested this) it switches in atti and you still have full control. When it gets strong GPS signal outdoors then it switches back in chosen mode (cine, normal, sport) and works flawlessly. But when I was flying in sunset, it went wild, same when I covered visual positioning sensor and flew outdoors (no problem indoors).
When neo goes wild then you loose almost all control over neo, it even stops tracking altitude and loses horizontal orientation.

I experienced AUM while flying at night. I was lucky to land it near the home point. There was some control but barely.

If true ATTI mode we should have control of the Neo.  Just no stabilization.

Is part of the Visual Sensor System (VSS) the camera sensor or just the downwards facing sensors.  Guessing based on my indoors AUM experience it might be.  Wonder even though the surface was identical from where the Neo had no issues is the low light of the deep shadow making even the textured surface see bottomless.  Always assumed once the height above ground OSD disappeared the downward visual sensors were detecting nothing.  Like a deep shadow.
