Do I really need to have the DJI Mic 2 transmitter unit?

G’Day from Australia.

First post here on the DJI Forum page.

I’m seriously considering upgrading my whole Motorcycle Vlogging setup.

I’m interested in purchasing the new “DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro Adventure Combo” and then using 2  “DJI Mic 2 Receviers”. One in my MC helmet and the second mic to record sound from the MC exhaust. Both would be paired to the Action 5 Pro camera at the same time.

For me it will be quite a significant expense to upgrade from my basic SENA 10C Pro setup. (The SENA has shocking audio and zero video stabilisation! It still makes a great everyday helmet Camera for safety purposes and is a good Coms unit). So, in the interest of saving a few coins, I’m looking at just buying 2 of the” DJI Mic 2 Receiver mics” and not even bothering to get the matching DJI Mic 2 Transmiter Unit. This way I can save myself about $200 Australian. The inbuilt battery in the reciver mics should be more than enough for my needs. If I am on an extended tourer, I can also use my high-capacity power- bank. (20,000mAh with USB Type C output) to re-charge the mics.

I do understand that by getting the full “DJI Mic 2 Digital Wireless Dual Microphone Kit with Charging Case” I would then be able to connect the microphones to other cameras and so on, but honestly I’m not interested in using other cameras for audio recording, as the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro is all I (hopefully) need.

So, by not bothering with the full Mic 2 kit,(transmiter included) and just instead using 2 mics with the Action 5 Pro camera, I save my self-$200 …'Right?" Or am I missing something here by not paying $200 extra for the matching Mic2 tramsmiter unit?

Any advice or your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers, Sean.

When you use DJI Mic 2 paired with the camera, the sound will be recorded to the camera in the video file so no need to sync audio after in post. With OA5 you can also have it to record a separate wav-file with audio from buildt in mics from the camera. With OA4/OA5 you will also be able to record in 32bit float, so the sound for DJI Mic 2 will be amazing.
What I have seen some do is buying a Zoom H1e external recorder and let it record engine sound with either lav-mic or by itself from the backpack or saddlebag (if there is any).

Yes, you don't need to buy the whole set, you can just buy the "transmitter" (Connection is provided via Bluetooth). Even OA5pro allows you to connect 2 transmitters. I did the same.

I actually bought DJI Mic 2 myself 2-3 days ago, and it is just amazing to use with OA5 (only used it once yet).
And I did buy only the Transmitter since it was like $99 on sale.

the Tx  is awesome, I also have the Rx but I am the only one that has four of the rxs that all have random  on issue  if you press the on for three seconds each and every time it does not go on like described, DJI has no answer for this as they are more interested in sales marketing then support

the Action 5 pro as long as no obstruction is in its way the unit is perfect

Thanks for confirming back to me,  that I really don’t need the transmitter for what I have in mind.

You will be fine with only the transmitters, I bought the receiver + 1x transmitter combo and apart from some tests with other cameras I haven't needed it for anything when using the OA5P. I use it to record the audio of my motorcycle rides without wind noise and it has been working pretty good.

I have the mic 2 full setup.

The one mic in helmet, the other to record ambient sound at rear of bike.

I do use the receiver from time to time when using my iPhone or other devices and doing dialog directly to camera.

Interesting topic, how are people using their mics to get bike noise without wind effects?

From what I've watched and read about the Osmo Action5 and the DJI mics, they appear to be top notch in reducing wind noise! Also, it's cool the way you can record sound from two different mics, at the same time.

I'm just holding off on "pulling the trigger", to see if suppliers will drop their prices come the "Black Friday" sales at the end of this month, November .

Some people do it advanced with an external recorder in saddle bag or in backpack.

But I think you will be good if you use the cage with some foam maybe to block wind and record an extra .wav file with OA5.

In this clip the mic was placed under the small storage area of the rear seat. The sound is not perfect since it is a lavalier microphone designed for human voice, but it's good enough for my purposes compared to trying to get something without wind noise from the onboard mics. I have been researching and the mic 2 3.5mm port seems to be a line-in, so it should be possible to connect a recorder line out for better quality. It is a test a still have pending to do since I have a zoom h1n but lately it has been raining a lot here and protecting from water the zoom is way more difficult than the small transmitter.

Hey there (from another Aussie),  You are spot on. I have both the Mic 2 charging case as well as a separate radio mic that I got with me. my Pocket 3.  But you don't need the wireless charging case.   I just got back from a 3-day adventure bike ride where I used this set up and the audio is AMAZING.   Here are two videos I made recently where I did tests of the radio mics on Exhausts.  This first video is just a sound test for my mate (an audio engineer).

https://youtu.be/OK_EafALtNQ

And this second one is a video I made where I used two mics, 1 in my helmet and 1 on the exhaust (exactly the same setup you are trying for).   If you watch at 7:55 you'll see the riding bit.

Thanks for the audio vids everyone. The rear mic audio sounds good. Thanks for taking the time to record and post the audio, it's appreciated!
