I've been playing around with the 4:3 mode on the Osmo Action 5 Pro, and it's very 'curious'. Usually, you could use 4:3: mode to gain extra height in the image for reframing later. But 4:3 mode on the Action 5 Pro is not only slightly narrower horizontally, but it doesn't give any more picture information at the top and the bottom of the frame! In fact, switching between 16:9 and 4:3 modes seems to show that all the camera seems to be doing is stretching the image slightly to 16:9 with slightly more information at the sides. then compressing it horizontally for 4:3!

Anyone else want to test this to make sure I'm not going mad?!

In fact, the same seems to happen on the Ace Pro 2, except worse. The Ace Pro 2 is narrower horizontally and vertically in 4:3 mode! Now, I'm mentioning the AP2 because the two cameras use the same sensor.

I just tested it and the 16:9 screen cuts the bottom and top out of the 4:3 screen and shows a cropped screen. No problem at all

Ultra Wide is what you should use, Wide or Dewarp will not gain much.
Yes I use 4:3 all time with Ultra Wide.

That's what I've been doing. But as you can see from the shots below, the differences are negligible in height. Maybe at a pinch there's the tiniest amount of extra height, but it's so tiny as to be negligible. Compare the DJI shots with the difference between two GoPro HERO11 (the last GoPro to give a 4:3 option) shots in 16:9 and 4:3. The GoPro demonstrates just how much extra vertical space there *should* be in 4:3 mode.

When I switch between the DJI 16:9 and 4:3 shots in the editor, you can see clearly the way in which it is compressing and uncompressing horizontally rather than giving any new vertical information.

See my other reply. That's not what's happening at all.

I need to check it out myself to be sure. Doesn't have a comparison between 16:9 and 4:3, so need to make one to check.

OA5P 16:9 Ultra wide is stretched 4:3 ultrawide
Same as GoPro Hero 11 but you can compare there 4:3 Wide with 16:9 Superview.

You "gain" height by comparing 16:9 Wide to 4:3 Wide

If 16:9 ultra wide on the OA5P is just stretched 4:3, then DJI is not being transparent about what it’s doing with these modes and how the lens functions.

With both OA3/OA4 you got true 4:3 ratio, but with OA5 we probably wont. I'm actually waiting for Fish to do the first test on this one before me.

Just like gopro... only fraction of the users know that 16:9 hyperview is the same as 8:7 Wide, just stretched...

But if you check it closer, the stretch is uneven, the sides are pulled more than the center, which creates an illusion of wider field of view.

Did you noticed when switching between 4:3 Wide and ultrawide the field of view remains the same but "wide" has less fisheye distortion, when rocksteady is on? But if you switch off EIS there IS a field of view difference.
With Rocksteady+ both Ultrawide/wide/dewarp has the same field of view...

It isn't really a case of people not knowing about it. It's also about how open a company is with how the modes work. GoPro has always been open with information on what HyperView and SuperView are and how they are working. They have produced official guides, so it's no secret. The stretch is uneven so that the centre of the image can remain relatively distortion free. But with the OA5P, 4:3 is literally being marketed as a way of getting extra height information. There's no documentation anywhere that I can find that describes the UW 16:9 view as being stretched 4:3.

Hi SimonMW, we've shared your pcitures with our engineering team for further check and informed that this issue caused by ultra wide. Kindly try use " wide " or " Dewarp " mode to avoid this and see if you're able to achieve the best result.

Please keep us posted and thank you for your understanding.
