There is now a mist filter available for the Action 3, 4 and 5. I like Freewell filters as well. At last ..... softer images that are in focus....

Mine arrives tomorrow. It'll be interesting to see if it also might help with the 'trumpet' flare and maybe turn it into a tuba. They have optical coatings.

I’ve been looking for an Action Cam softening filter for some time now. Don’t like the over sharpened look that you often get with action cams and turning it down in camera isn’t the same look as a mist filter.

I wrote to Freewell a year ago asking about one in the UK because they were selling them in China and suddenly, they’ve appeared on Amazon.

Not only soften the look but they’re coated so I’m also interested in what they do with flaring.

Both are being sent to me so I guess I’ll be biased! Hah ha!!!

I’m going to compare the two of them. I. Looking forward to getting the footage to look nice and soft. I used to use a glimmer glass on my GoPro or even a Smoque filter and it just took it a little away from that ‘glassy’ look of an action cam.

On a gimbal with a slow shutter as well, it was possible to get some really smooth looking footage with proper motion blur and no artifacts.

They’re coming tomorrow……

Any update Ian, would you do same clip side by side with & without really curious how much impact the mist will have.  Could you also state texture & nr settings or try a variation. This might the better mod than fov lens.

Ok. For people watching on phones or IPads, there won’t be much difference. For me, it helps on a large screen that is a bit too bright and sharp for its own good! My own preference is actually he K&F because it screws on whereas the Freewell is a push fit. They seem to work much the same as other 'mist' filters and the effect is quite subtle.

I’m also interested in what it does with flare because they are both coated.

I went out this morning with the K&F filter because it screws on. The Freewell doesn't and tbh the difference between them is negligible. The effect might not be seen on a phone or perhaps a small monitor screen as easily. On a large screen it is smoother looking. I'll put together a little video.

30FPS set at auto. Sharpening and NR at default. After using the filter, I felt that it wouldn't be worth lowering the sharpness at least for the YouTube video. So people could see it at ‘default’ settings.

Seems to lower contrast, diffuse highlights and indeed, makes the overall look softer. In the comparison shots, each pair was given the exact same treatment for comparison purposes but in reality, you could up/down contrast if you wanted to.

Oh I enjoyed making it. I feel now that I can get that softer look from my Action 5 and get it to match better with my Canons and Sony cameras. Before, the Action footage stood out by comparison ….

I've had my eye on one of these. But I wondered how the stabilisation would perform. Because I would have thought a softer picture would hurt the stabilisation efforts. Or maybe the softness is negligible?

The focus is still sharp. I tried walking in my video and it seemed fine. The effect is pretty subtle so I don’t think it hits stabilisation too hard. It tends to put bloom into highlights and brings the contrast down so the image 'appears' softer although it's still in focus. In my video, try looking at the leaves in front of the sun .... you'll see the bloom from the sun in those leaves which disappears when the filter comes off. It doesn't produce blur, or motion blur so focus is still there.

I just prefer the look, but then again, I don’t tend to throw my cameras around too much tbh. Also, I've used them for a long time on my bigger cameras so I guess I'm used to a 'softer' look in video and grown to prefer it. In any case, they're pretty cheap to try and keep in your arsenal of effects!

It's not a typical action cam look, but I use it more as a general shooting camera rather than as an action cam.
