I have the phantom 3 pro - got it last week
I have tried a couple times unsuccessfully to upgrade the firmware.  I have followed the instructions from various youtube videos and from the .pdf file from dji and cannot update the aircraft or the controller.   
  I have read someplace in FAQ's (#19)  "if using windows to upgrade firmware you have to download the DJI drivers first"   -   I am confused about this?     

Is this the reason I cannot update the firmware?     what am I installing these drivers on and what do I do with them?
I have tried installing the newest firmware and an older version with no luck.  when I turn everything on the software is telling me RC needs upgrade, aircraft needs upgrade and camera needs upgrade.   I have not been able to calibrate the compass and am guessing it is due to this firmware update?

Any help is most appreciated

thanks for the quick reply.  I am charging the battery now and will give it a go as soon as it is 100%
isn't the most recent firmware for the aircraft only and not the controller and camera?
Do I need to update the aircraft to 1.4.0  and the controller to 1.3.2?   will this update the camera as well?

Let us know how you are doing the upgrade. What steps are you taking?
And yes, the controller is 1.3.2.

Yes the RC (remote controller) needs to be 1.3.2 - you can do this first and use the 16GB card that came with your purchase. Then remove the '.bin' file and replace it with the 1.4.0010 one and do the aircraft and battery (at the same time). When updating only the item you are updating needs to be on!

I'm sorry to say my report is one of bad news...   I reformatted the card and downloaded the new firmware for the airplane and the 1.3.2 for the RC.   Only put one on the card and tried to update the RC.  when I powered it up, it did nothing and no lights changed color.  after about 10 minutes it started beeping and wouldn't stop so after a bit I turned it off.   
  The update of the airplane went poorly as well.   after reformatting the card and installing the correct .bin file  I powered up the aircraft.  the lights have been blinking yellow since it started.  the other lights are solid red.  at one point it stopped beeping and the camera moved about, but then it went back to the steady beeeeeeeeep....beep...beep  pattern.  It has now been doing that for 45 minutes.  I will let it run for a bit more but don't expect anything to change.  This is pretty much what happened both of the other times I tried to update.
    Any help is most appreciated

As it says in the thread I pointed you to:

When the light on the gimbal goes SOLID GREEN ( and you hear the DA...DA.DA beep ), turn off the Phantom by pressing and releasing the power button quickly, then immediately press and hold it in for 2 seconds. If the gimbal light turns SOLID RED, then the upgrade has failed. Also, turn off the Phantom. (The light we're talking about is the small led in the center of the camera housing:



2. Check the upgrade status by opening the “.txt” file that is automatically generated on the SD card after the update (you need to plug the SD back into your computer for this). The final line in the LOG file should have the word “Success”.

If there is a failure, Then take a look on the SD card that performs the update. There is a DCIM folder but also DJI puts a hidden MISC folder. If you can turn on viewing hidden file & folder. (MAC OS/X  ) or (Windows)
Inside this hidden MISC folder are four hidden folders (IDX, LOG, THM, & XCODE). If you look in the LOG folder there is a detailed log of the update with all component results. Post the detailed log and we can see exactly what's failing....

Before starting calibrations, please research how, where, and when to perform calibrations
since a bad calibration is as evil as no calibraton at all!

Last, power everything on and check the RC version to ensure it is at 1.3.20.
Use the GO App and Go to Camera View -> Click in the upper right corner to select the General Settings. At the very bottom of General Settings is ABOUT. Select About and check versions..

I'm  happy to hear that it indicates the update was successful but if it was then why would all of the indicator lights not perform like they are supposed to?   My RC light never turned blue or changed colors at all.
the aircraft light were two solid red the entire time and two blinked yellow the entire time and the process never shut off - I turned it off after two hours.

I checked the status with everything hooked up and on the app:  Overall status -requires upgrade > RC requires upgrade   1.3.20
under the About tab:   Ap version  2.2.0
                                Aircraft      1.4.10
                                 RC           1.2.6+

even though the aircraft and RC didn't behave like it was supposed to during upgrading does it appear that I am ungraded to current firmware?
Why is the app telling me the RC needs to be upgraded?

Terrylewis:   can you explain how I go about evaluate my sensors to see if I need to to perform any recommended calibrations... Compass, Gimbal, IMU?   I don't even know what IMU is?   how do I check these?

the RC must be updated, but as i can remember it will not update to 1.3.20 via the bin file, but you have to update it with your phone/tablet connected and also having wifi to the internet.

1. Go to the DJI GO App > Camera View > System Status bar > Overall Status. Tap Download the firmware update package to download and
update the firmware. Track the update progress from progress bar in the DJI GO App. The status LED on the remote controller will blink
blue during update and blink green when update is complete with success.
Firmware update through the DJI GO app will not work with older versions of the remote controller firmware. If the firmware update fails, follow
the instructions below to update the firmware using the traditional method:
a. Update the latest firmware package files from DJI official web site.
b. Extract all downloaded files into the root directory of an SD card or USB flash drive.
c. Turn off the remote controller, Insert the SD card into a SD card reader or the USB disk onto the remote controller USB port when remote
controller is turned off.
d. Power on the remote controller and wait 60 seconds until the upgrade begins. Do not power off the remote controller during the update.
e. It will take approximately 10 minutes to complete the firmware update. The camera will sound a beeping sound and the Status LED on the

Sensor Background:
Your P3 is a technology marvel that combines multiple sensors to provide a stable airborne platform for photography. Besides GPS (GPS antenna is under the dome between the motor arms), your P3 has an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) consisting of Accelerometers, Gyroscopes, and Barometer. It is located in the center of the Main Controller Board under the GPS antenna. It measures accelerations, angular movements, and changes in altitude. At the left rear base of the landing gear as you face the P3, is a small plastic cube that holds a compass. Together, all of these sensors work together to give you amazing stability inflight.

Before each flight and after upgrades, take a look at the sensor values in the DJI GO App.
1) Turn on the RC
2) Turn on the P3 and look for the left RC led to turn Green
3) Launch the GO App and enter Camera View
4) In the upper left corner, next to the Home icon is the Flight Mode icon. Click this icon that looks like a small quadcopter and it will open MC Settings (Main Controller Settings)
5) Down at the bottom select Sensors

This presentation shows the three axis readings of your gyros, your accelerometers, and your compass.
If your P3 is level, then your gyros should read 0.00, -0.00, & -0.00
your Accelerometers should read 0.00, 0.00, & -1.00
And your compass can be reading anything depending on its location and heading.
The really cool thing that DJI provides us are the MOD values. These are simply Root Sum Square (RSS) values that let you analyze the statistical accuracy of these values. So with your P3 level, the MOD values should read as follows:
GYRO -> MOD = 0.00
ACCELERATION -> MOD = 1.00
COMPASS -> MOD = around 1500 (between 1400 and 1600) (The compass values above were taken indoors and are NOT valid for flight)
(The compass is most sensitive to metallic objects so if your compass MOD is high or low, suspect metallic interference and move to another location) Compass calibration is normally performed more often than other calibrations. Here are a couple of links about your compass and how to calibrate it:

The IMU calibration is critical to safe flight. Below your sensor display the GO App provides a Check IMU button. If your MOD values are off or you aircraft does not fly stable, then Check your IMU by clicking this button. Please read about IMU calibrations.
