Hi folks,

I've had my DJI Mavic Air 2 for almost 4 years now, and the flying range this year has been very disappointing to say the least.

I flew it most days for the first 2 years I got it, and I was able to easily fly it more than 2.5km from me, sometimes beyond 3km. No connection issues whatsoever.

This year, I may have only flown it 20 days. However each of those times, when I try to fly more than 500m away from me, the RC controller strength signal starts flashing yellow, then red, and then it starts trying to return home.

Nothing I do when I fly has changed.

I live in a rural part of Ireland, where the land is flat and there are virtually no obstructions in terms of tall trees or buildings.

I use the same DJI RC-N1 that I bought with the drone. I usually use my Huawei phone to fly, but I also tried an iPhone and it runs into the same range problems. I bought new cables that connect the phones to the controller, as I thought maybe the cables were worn out over time, but the same issue persists.

I'm wondering has this happened for other Mavic Air 2 owners? And is the solution to buy a new controller with a built-in screen? Or anything else?

Thanks in advance

Hi there,

We're sorry to hear about your experience. The quality of image transmission can be affected by various factors in your surroundings, such as Wi-Fi interference, signal strength, the position of the receiver, and physical barriers. To address this, please follow these steps:

1. Ensure that your drone's firmware, the remote controller's firmware, and the app are all up to date. Update or refresh them to the latest versions if needed.
2. Please position the remote controller's antennas correctly as picture below.
3. Avoid obstacles such as trees, buildings, and other sources of wireless signals when flying your drone.
4. Check for interference in the flight environment. You can use the Image Transmission Settings to monitor the real-time channel quality. If there's significant interference, we recommend changing the flight environment.

If the issue persists, please provide the recorded video of the image transmission in the app during the flight. The video should include the flight environment and the image transmission channel page showing any interference.

We look forward to your response.

Hi Natalia,

Thank for getting back to me. Apologies for my delayed response, I haven't had many opportunities to fly during the winter months.

I just tried a quick flight, and I am linking to a screen recording of my flight via Youtube on the following link -

At 0:33, when my height is at 38m and my distance is 275m, the RC strength is already losing signal. And as you can see from my take-off position, I encountered zero obstructions of any kind.

At 1:02, my height is 45m and my distance is between 600m and 700m, the RC signal strength again loses connection for a few seconds.

At 1:17, my height is 45m and I'm approaching 900m. This time I lose total connection and it's only when I climb up to 92m that I regain a mostly stable connection. During this period, it tried to automatically RTH.

For the remainder of the video, there are other connections issues, but that's mostly the gist of it.

1. I always have my drone, controller, and app firmware up to date before flying.
2. I have my antennas positioned correctly as shown in your pictures.
3. I avoid obstacles as much as practically possible. In the case of this video, I have a clear path always.
4. There wasn't any interference in the flight environment. As you can see in the video, I'm in a rural area where little other activity going on around.

The only reason I am so disappointed in the performance of my Mavic Air 2 now is because of how amazing it was in the past.

I was able to fly more than 3000m away, without having to gain much elevation, and connection was always solid and clear. There would even be trees I would have flown over and down again, but getting a connection through them wasn't an issue.

Now, unless I go very high, in a place with no obstructions around me whatsoever, I can at most, fly 1500m away.

Would you recommend I buy the DJI RC controller with a built-in FHD screen? So I can avoid having to use my mobile phone altogether?

Thanks in advance.

Kind regards,

Patrick
