Today, I flew the DJI NEO using my phone. I took it up to about 15 meters and kept it in place while I stood on a bridge. After a few seconds, the DJI NEO started drifting away, and I could clearly see it was not due to the wind. I tried to bring it back and land the drone, but it did not respond and continued to drift slowly, while still connected to my phone because I was still receiving the video feed. Of course, as it flew further away, the connection started to disrupt. After a few seconds, the drone suddenly veered rapidly to one side, then to the other, before flying off completely. I lost sight of it and thought it had already fallen into the water. However, I could still hear it somewhere nearby. Eventually, I saw it flying at high speed toward the bridge, where I was standing, and it crashed into one of the bridge's pillars. What happened? Was it some kind of drone interception? Or did the DJI NEO system malfunction? But how/why— it was in manual control via the phone and not in any autonomous mode. Also, it flew at very high speed, like it was in sport mode, even though when controlled via the phone, it shouldn’t have had the ability to fly in sport mode. It’s also strange that, after losing control and flying erratically, the drone didn’t fall into the water but instead "came back" to the bridge and crashed into the pillar. |
