Exactly! Hiking the trail to the ridge line made it evident that an invading force would have to be dispersed and open to ambush from above repeatedly. An ideal natural and defendable fortress.

He didn't get to be a great Chief by not using his wits and what natural things were available to him and his tribe. History seems to think that he is buried somewhere up in that stronghold.
It’s amazing that Fort Huachuca (Home of the Buffalo Soldiers) and Tombstone are within approx. 60 miles of Cochise Stronghold. It today’s world, it’s only an hour’s drive away in the safety of a 4x4 or SUV. During the 1800’s a lot of bad things could happen on the trail within 60 miles.
