Seems odd as here you only find them on top of barns.
I just did a little goggling and found this....
Historically many Protestant churches in Europe placed a rooster atop their steeples to distinguish them from Catholic Churches. The rooster has been a Christian symbol since God used it to show the weakness of man with Peter and the triumph of Christ in the resurrection.
Also there was this....
Around 600 A.D that Pope Gregory I declared that the rooster, with its symbolism of Christ's passion, was the most suitable emblem for Christianity. As such, the first cockerels began to appear on top of weathervanes, later being fitted to the top of every Christian church steeple. |
