I had always been reluctant to invest in bringing drones into my work as a director of films made by children because I knew that the aerial shots we could get would be sparsely used throughout a film and doesn't justify the absolute need for a drone. The Neo changed all of that. An autonomous drone that could act as a floating tripod, a crane, could be used indoors and could retain usable audio was a great reason to get into using drones.

Nonetheless, the Neo always felt like a toy and had limitations with environments that weren't brightly lit. Even 30 meters in altitude would frighten me because the wind here would immediately knock it around. So basically, it was brilliant as long as you didn't expect to use it to0 much more than the autonomous functions. I'd still recommend it for travel vloggers and children.

But the Flip! The Flip feels like a more serious drone and has enough power to challenge a beginner while simultaneously easing the beginner pilot into a better skillset. The first time I dared to ascend, I surprisingly hit 90 meters without even noticing and the Flip remained perfectly stable the entire time. I was scary, then thrilling and then encouraged me to be bolder and more audacious. I can't wait to get out and fly the Flip more even beyond filming movies with children.

If you're primarily a vlogger and want a floating cameraman, I do like the Neo. But if you want to level up in every other way and aren't ready for a more powerful drone, the Flip has impressed me in every way so far.

I 100% agree, i understand that the two groups now either i  the fpv camp or the older mavic/mini camp will both not jump on this or see why this has its place but like you i fully do its a floating tripod with a actioncam on top. Perfect for taking photo's from places hard to get too or some simple video shots. Quicker and more safe for the owner and people around it.

I had a cheapo that just did not work, so I jumped on the Flip when it came out. I do primarily travel videos and wanted to get some high shots. I really like to audio flexibility. I use a lavalier tied to my cell (I use an RC2 which my cameraman (my wife) controls), I use a small independent mic as a backup recorder and a boom mic on a rack for my cell. The last I do not use with drone. I like the lavalier because we keep Flip far enough away for drone noise not be a problem. I have concentrated on sound as I get accustomed to the drone. Any suggestions about sound? I will post a video if I get insights that are worthy of sharing.

Same as you, I use a lavalier mic (specifically DJI Mic Mini) directly with my phone and the fly app if I'm recording narration with the drone for any reason (such as direction tracks), but I generally don't need spoken dialogue with most of my drone shots.  I connect mics directly to a DSLR or Osmo Pocket 3 if I'm filming a scene.

If an actor needs to deliver a line during a drone shot, it's usually far enough away that the viewer wouldn't be able to tell that the spoken dialogue doesn't sync perfectly with the actor's lips.
