I'll be replacing the iPad mini used with the pilot app for my 1,  a late 2013 A1490 model 64gb wifi cellular which has worked great so far.. Really like the size of my old mini but upgrading to the new mini 4 Good enough ?... Or opt for the larger screen, faster chipped iPad Air 2 using GPS & glonas plus a barometer etc.. Suggestions anyone....

I love the Air 2, works flawlessly, but the new samsungs have better screens in the sun, much brighter and easier to see (at least my note 5 phone...).  I prefer the phone now even though the screen is 1/3 the size of the Ipad, just a lot easier to see the detail!

When I first got my Inspire, I already owned an iPad air but wanted to keep it as the "house" tablet. so I tried out the Samsung tab 4 (7 inch?)due to size and price. the screen was not bad, but the frame rate was horrible. So I returned it and got the Samsung tab 4S in 8.4 inch (figured the extra power may fix the frame rate / lag issue) . also nice size and screen.. but the frame rate was killing me. It was not fluid and lagged behind by what seemed like a second. (yes, made sure everything was in airplane mode and it was not a symptom of some other interference) after all that, I decided to just you my iPad air after all and im very happy. Only issue I have now, My wife seems to want to use it when I want to go flying.

I work with a IPad Mini 3, but noticed a lot of lag the last time.
I don't know if it's the IOS 9 or the processer of the mini, IPad Air 2 has a better processor.
Really like the size of the mini, those 10" tablets are BIG !!!!

Ah yes wife shares the air 2 ... Nice ! ... Does the air two feel heavy or clumsy mounted to the RC ?

Not to me it doesn't.  Make sure the mount is tight and won't swivel on you when you are flying, but beyond that it works like a dream, no frame rate issues or lag! (just wish it was brighter!)

Side note, I think the IOS app is a lot easier to use than the android app though!

Great then not too heavy,  yes on tightening the swivel and thumb nut with the added weight..
I prefer the Mac Apple iOS stuff but agree the screens should be a little brighter too.
Haven't noticed much lag , video tx latency using the iPad mini. Hmmmm...new mini 4 or new air 2...

Right on Paul, thanks never liked the DJI ( harness ) myself, i use a neck strap from my spectrum rc unit once in awhile on sketchy terrain but prefer no strap most of the time. Still like the minis size so I'm on the fence at this point, air 2 or mini 4 .. Almost the same guts, A8X chip air2.  A8 chip mini4.  The price diff is a few hundred bucks more or less both with 64gb and cellular, ah decisions .. Maybe a trip to bestbuy
with my rc for size weight fitting comparison... Easy enough then thanks guys !   

Upon further investigation: the new  iPad mini 4  and iPad Air 2  / Compared to the older iPad's with the A7 chip.

Mini 4, A8 second gen chip.
Cpu: 1.3 x faster.
Graphics: 1.6 x faster.
Motion processor: M8.

Air 2, A8X second gen chip.
Cpu: 1.4 x faster.
Graphics: 2.5 x faster.
Motion processor: M8.Positioning: Both ipads are using assisted GPS / glonas positioning system.  
Sensors: Both ipads include a barometer for better positioning.

Now go compare the maps loading on the iPad and any Android.
iOS maps are outdated.
Unless you're flying on the middle of nowhere,  not good at all.

I guess I don't really get the maps argument, of all my flights I think I have looked at the map maybe once...  I guess I am either lucky or missing out, maybe someone here can tell me which one...

Agreed, they could do better with updating their maps in some locations. I'm in the u.s. So here the maps are pretty well covered, up to date or not.
I don't rely on the map much in flight , it's post flight record I'm using mostly for reviewing when needed.
When I'm out in the middle of nowhere with no cellular link I'll fly camera view only,  no map...

Right then Dave E... I'm leaning towards the mini 4. to replace the mini 2 in use now.

I bought the Mini and returned it for the Air 2.  The mini's screen I found more reflective than the Air 2.

Even though the new ipad Pro doesn't fit into the controller holder, it would be interesting to see how good it works.

Hey daver the mini 4 fits perfectly inside the DJI sun shade aswel.

I have an Ipad Mini 2 A1489
I loved it at first. It was super smooth and responsive. Then after firmware update 1.3, its like there is a half second delay and makes it difficult to fly. I may be downgrading back to 1.2 and see if that really is the true cause.

I use a iPad mini 2 with cellular 32 gig.
