Yes,  there appears to be only a couple of boats with a licence for it,   Ive seen in Leigh an advert for the other one.

Scattering ashes at sea, also known as a sea scattering or burial at sea, is a way to honor the memory of a loved one by releasing their cremated remains into the ocean. This is an increasingly popular practice and I've seen it done from both boat and low flying airplane.

Burial at sea is not for everybody.  However, it serves as a reminder of our human mortality and the cycle of life and death and draws from the biblical concept of being made from dust and returning to dust.

A retired Navy Captain I know has made his desires known that he wants a burial at sea.  He says he has a deep personal connection to the ocean and feels a sense of peace and tranquility associated with it.  He says it will be an honored final resting place.  

It is definitely a way to become one with nature after death.

I'm not sure if he is being cremated and then ashes spread at sea or actually being buried at sea.  I guess I need to ask him next time I see him.

I think the latter is only available to the Navy here.

Non-Navy boats here require a license to perform burials at sea.  I was just checking the regulations to see if any had changed.  

To perform a burial at sea, the remains must be disposed of at least three nautical miles from land, in water at least 600 feet deep, and all materials used must be biodegradable; for cremated remains, the depth restriction does not apply, but the three nautical mile distance from land still holds true; additionally, notification to the EPA within 30 days of the burial is usually required.

A body and a shroud on the sea floor normally disintegrates within three to six months.  California has an off-shore underwater cemetery.

There's an article here with some weight requirements.  Just scroll down to Instructions for Burial at Sea and it has the requirements for holes, weights, etc.

Well thats disappointing.   You can't be cremated in a boat at sea.    So no viking services.  


It's quite the process though.

     Yeah, no Viking services unless your boat catches fire and you go down with it.  With all the scuba diving I've done I've yet to come across a weighted down corpse that has been buried at sea.
